A 21-year-old man is facing serious charges following an incident on an international flight from Thailand to Australia, which reportedly involved the assault of both an airline crew member and a fellow passenger. The event occurred on April 1, during a Jetstar Airways flight from Phuket to Melbourne.

According to a statement by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the passenger allegedly confronted a female flight attendant by grabbing her shoulders and shaking her when she declined his request for a hug. This inappropriate behaviour escalated further when the man made his way to the back of the aircraft and is accused of assaulting another passenger by delivering several punches to the man’s face after exiting the lavatory.
Cabin crew members intervened and managed to restrain the individual until the flight’s captain was informed of the situation. Prompted by the events unfolding on board, the captain requested assistance from law enforcement upon landing at Melbourne Airport. In footage captured by body cameras, the passenger can be seen handcuffed and escorted from the plane to awaiting police officers at the arrivals gate.
Following his behaviour on the flight, the man faces significant legal consequences. He has been charged with one count of assaulting a member of the crew, an offence that carries a potential maximum sentence of ten years in prison. Furthermore, he also faces a charge of common assault, which could lead to an additional two years of imprisonment.
Superintendent Stephen Cook of the AFP emphasised the seriousness of such actions, stating, “The AFP has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the assault or mistreatment of passengers or cabin crew, and anyone who commits such an offence can expect to be prosecuted.” He further noted that a strong police presence at major Australian airports reinforces the commitment to passenger safety.
The accused appeared in Broadmeadows Magistrates Court earlier this week, where he faced the charges stemming from the incident. The court proceedings are ongoing as authorities continue to address the implications of his actions onboard the aircraft.
