Woman Has to Visit 3 Hospitals to Find Antivenom After Snake Bite

In an alarming incident, a woman in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, suffered a copperhead snake bite while relaxing on her porch. Ree Lawson, a bassist in a local band, was bitten on the hand as she unknowingly disturbed the snake, which had been concealed among jasmine vines.

Lawson described the experience as a sudden and intense pain, likening it to the sensation of being shot. In her state of panic, she immediately sought medical attention. However, her journey to securing antivenom turned into a harrowing ordeal. She first visited an urgent care centre, followed by the nearest emergency room, both of which unfortunately lacked the necessary antivenom for her treatment.

Desperate for help, Lawson was transferred to a third hospital. It was only after this lengthy and distressing search that she was finally given the antivenom she needed. Reflecting on the experience, Lawson expressed her fears about the potential loss of her hand or fingers, which could have had a devastating impact on her music career. “It was terrifying,” she said. “You spend the whole time thinking… I’m going to lose this hand, or I’m going to lose this finger, and it’s horrifying.”

Copperhead snakes are prevalent across much of the Eastern United States, with a range extending as far west as Texas. These snakes prefer habitats such as forests, swamps, and areas near water, making encounters with humans not wholly uncommon. Characterised by their distinctive brown and copper hues, copperheads exhibit diamond-patterned scales which can provide them with effective camouflage in their natural surroundings.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), timely administration of antivenom is critical for recovery following a snake bite. The agency states that receiving antivenom as soon as possible aids in the healing of affected limbs and reduces the risk of permanent disability resulting from envenomation.

While copperhead snakes are not typically aggressive, they may strike if they feel threatened. Their behaviour includes freezing in place when frightened, which can lead to unintentional encounters with unsuspecting individuals. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission highlights the copperhead as the state’s most common and widely spread venomous snake.

Lawson’s case has raised awareness about the potential dangers of snake bites, particularly as they can occur in seemingly safe and familiar environments such as one’s backyard. Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the need for preparedness when living in areas that are home to these creatures.

In a coincidental turn of events, Lawson’s encounter comes shortly after a notable incident involving Joshua Kimmich, the captain of the German Men’s National Football Team. Kimmich spotted a copperhead snake while in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, which serves as their training base for the World Cup.
