Nolan, a student-athlete, was reported missing following a party on July 4. His friends expressed confusion over why he did not return with them, leaving many questions surrounding his final hours. After two days of intense search efforts, tragedy struck when searchers located his remains on the morning of July 6.

Gill, who serves as an incident commander for the United Cajun Navy, became involved in the search after a friend of Nolan’s reached out to him on social media. Kayla Conway, who did not attend the party, communicated with Christine Wonsley the following day to extend her support. She contacted Gill through Facebook, seeking assistance for the family.

In less than an hour after Christine made contact with Gill, additional resources, including two boats and a drone, were mobilised to aid in the search. Gill reflected on the urgency of their response, noting the gravity of the situation as search boats were prepared to navigate the waters in hopes of finding Nolan.

Tragically, on that fateful morning, Gill received a call from law enforcement confirming that a body, likely belonging to Nolan, had been recovered. He made his way to the public boat dock, where the coordination of search efforts was taking place, just as Nolan’s parents were arriving to hear the news.

When Christine Wonsley arrived and spotted Gill, the emotional weight of the moment became apparent. “She gets out, runs straight to me, hyperventilating, and I give her the biggest hug,” Gill recalled. As they embraced, the depth of her loss manifested, and Christine collapsed in his arms, unable to bear the heartache of her son’s fate.

Understanding the difficult conversations ahead, Gill attempted to offer support, consulting with Christine on her instinct regarding the identity of the body. “I said, ‘Look, there are going to be some tough conversations coming up. We don’t know if it’s your son,’” he recounted. Christine gazed into his eyes and firmly stated, “That’s my son.”

While initial reports from authorities suggested there were no apparent signs of foul play and indicated drowning as a possible cause, Nolan’s parents voiced their concerns about the investigation’s conclusions. The Jackson County District Attorney, Angel Myers McIlrath, has indicated that once the investigation concludes, a grand jury will be convened to determine whether charges should be filed.
