In recent months, major airlines in the United States have introduced bans on the transport of humanoid and animal-like robots due to safety concerns linked to the batteries that power these devices. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have joined Southwest Airlines in prohibiting these types of robots as both cabin and checked baggage.

The restriction came to light after Southwest implemented its policy in late May, following several incidents that garnered significant public attention. One notable occurrence involved a delayed flight when crew members raised concerns over a robot seated next to an aisle, suspected of contravening existing rules regarding large carry-on items. The situation escalated as staff became worried about the robot’s batteries, which are known to potentially catch fire during flights.

Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in many electronic devices, including power banks, have been problematic for airlines due to reports of them smoking or igniting in the confined spaces of a plane. This led Southwest Airlines to declare a clear policy: no human-like or animal-like robots would be allowed on board, regardless of their size. A spokesperson for the airline emphasised that the size of the batteries was a key concern impacting flight safety.

Following Southwest’s lead, United Airlines instituted a similar ban starting July 23. Company representatives stated that the ban specifically targets humanoid and animal-like robots, asserting that these devices often leverage battery technologies which do not comply with safety regulations. United assured its customers that while this policy seeks to enhance overall safety, other robotic devices, such as children’s toys, may still be permitted, provided they adhere to specific size, weight, and battery stipulations.
Delta Air Lines introduced its own restrictions shortly before United, on June 18, also citing safety as a primary reason. As with the other airlines, Delta determined that the batteries in these robots exceed the watt-hour limits mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Delta’s stance is that such technological devices do not qualify as assistive tools, nor do they meet the definition of trained service animals, thus justifying their exclusion from flights.
The blanket bans have sparked a conversation among experts and enthusiasts about the implications for research and development in robotics. Professor Ravinder Dahiya from Northeastern University has expressed his understanding of the safety concerns underlying these policies. He highlighted that while fire risks are genuine, researchers often face challenges when transporting robots for demonstrations or projects.
Conversely, some industry professionals, like Aaron Mehdizadeh, founder of The Robot Studio in North Dallas, defend the use of batteries within these robots, drawing parallels to laptop batteries which are generally seen as safe for air travel. Mehdizadeh notably gained media attention when he secured a seat for his 3.5-foot humanoid robot, Stewie, on a Southwest flight, equipped with a smaller battery to facilitate the travel process. His experience resulted in numerous social media interactions, portraying a positive public response to the presence of robots on flights.
Not long after Mehdizadeh’s journey with Stewie, Southwest Airlines issued a comprehensive safety alert, prompting the implementation of its new policy. This swift response illustrates the influence of public incidents on airline regulations, particularly regarding technologies that may pose safety risks.
