A public health alert has been issued concerning a mislabelled food product sold in several Costco locations. Red’s All Natural Steak, Cilantro and Lime Burritos are at the centre of the alert due to an undeclared egg allergen stemming from a packaging error.

The notification was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on 29 July. The affected burritos, which are individually wrapped within 3-lb., 2-oz. cartons, may pose a risk to individuals with egg allergies as the product actually contains egg, although this allergen is not mentioned on the packaging.

The lots implicated in the alert bear various production codes, including L1 SD6170 1503 and L1 SD6170 2130. All affected items display the establishment number EST. 46069 inside the USDA mark of inspection. These products were manufactured on 19 June 2026 and distributed to Costco locations across Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Consumer concerns arose when one shopper discovered that the burritos contained a different product that included egg, leading to further investigation. Red’s All Natural’s official website indicates the burritos typically comprise steak, brown rice, black beans, white cheddar, sweet corn, red bell peppers, and red onions enveloped in a tortilla, but notably, they do not normally contain egg.
The FSIS issued the alert to highlight potential dangers to consumers with egg allergies, emphasising that those individuals should refrain from eating the burritos in question. The agency noted that the producer informed them of the misbranding issue, which could lead to serious health implications for allergic consumers.
FSIS has expressed concern that some affected products may remain in consumers’ freezers. Individuals with the burritos in their possession are advised to either discard or return the items, although a formal recall was not initiated, as these products are reportedly no longer in circulation.
Fortunately, there have been no documented cases of adverse reactions linked to the consumption of these burritos thus far. Nevertheless, people who feel unwell after eating the product are encouraged to consult a healthcare professional for further guidance.
The situation has sparked interest in food safety, particularly regarding allergen mislabeling in the food supply chain. Other instances of misbranding this summer have highlighted similar allergen omissions. Earlier in June, FSIS announced a public health alert for Private Selection Honey Dijon Boneless and Skinless Chicken Breasts when it emerged that the product contained undeclared eggs on an incorrect label.
Individuals looking for information regarding food safety or who seek to report issues are urged to reach out to the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline or the FSIS via their online platforms. As consumer awareness of food allergies rises, these alerts serve as crucial reminders of the importance of accurate labelling in preventing allergic reactions.
As of now, neither Red’s All Natural nor Costco has publicly commented on the issue, adding to the urgency for transparent communication regarding food safety to foster public trust and safety in retail food products.
