A 17-year-old student tragically lost his life in New York City after his e-bike was involved in a collision with an SUV. The incident, which occurred on July 29, has prompted local officials to call for heightened e-bike safety regulations.

The victim, identified as Gabriel Nacato, was reportedly en route to seek help with his summer job applications when the accident occurred. His sister, Fernanda Nacato, shared her heartbreak in an interview, stating, “He was a beautiful boy. He was loved by everyone. We’re all crying. We all miss him.” The family is grappling with the profound loss of a young life filled with promise.
The accident took place around 8:54 a.m. when emergency services were alerted to a crash at the intersection of Centre and Chambers streets in Lower Manhattan. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson, Gabriel was riding north on Centre Street when his e-bike collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 40-year-old woman. Witnesses reported that he fell onto the roadway and, unfortunately, sustained fatal injuries.
Despite receiving prompt medical attention, Gabriel was pronounced dead at the scene. As details emerge, it has been noted that he was riding a Deepower electric bike, known to exceed speeds of 25 mph. The sale and operation of such bikes are illegal in New York City, underscoring the ongoing dialogue around e-bike safety regulations.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene, and investigators from the NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Squad are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash. No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
At a press briefing on a separate matter, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his sorrow, saying, “We’re talking about a 17-year-old New Yorker who is now dead.
