A drone pilot in Australia has achieved a remarkable feat by capturing what is believed to be the first-ever aerial footage of a humpback whale giving birth. The event took place during the annual migration of humpback whales along the country’s east coast, an extraordinary occurrence in the natural world.

On Tuesday, 28 July, Alexander Forrest, who works with the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA), was tracking a group of migrating humpbacks when he observed an adult female whale moving unusually slowly. Initially, Forrest suspected that the whale was resting, as he had never seen an individual travel with such deliberate slowness. However, what unfolded next was beyond anything he could have imagined.

As Forrest prepared to document the whale, it unexpectedly began to rise towards the surface. Sensing a unique moment, he activated the drone’s camera. He soon realised that the whale was not simply surfacing for air; rather, it was preparing to deliver a calf. “A plume of blood appeared beneath her, and a tiny calf rose to the surface for its very first breath,” Forrest recounted, noting the astonishment he felt in witnessing this rare spectacle.
Following the birth, the mother whale remained motionless for a brief period before instinctively turning back to her newborn calf. “Watching that first reunion between mother and baby was one of the most remarkable wildlife encounters I’ve ever experienced,” Forrest reflected. The connection between the mother and her calf, so emblematic of the nurturing behaviour seen in many species, unfolded against the backdrop of the vast ocean.
Annie Post, head of research at ORRCA, confirmed that only three other humpback whale births have been documented in history, making this aerial footage particularly significant. She emphasised that it is thought to be the first instance of such a birth being filmed from the air, thereby contributing valuable insights into the reproductive and maternal behaviours of humpback whales.
Forrest and his colleagues monitored the pair for several hours post-birth, capturing footage of the mother’s nurturing actions and her brief interactions with other migrating whales. Such detailed observations are invaluable, especially during this time of year when around 50,000 humpback whales migrate along the east coast of Australia.
According to the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, these whales journey north from the nutrient-rich Antarctic waters, where they feed on krill between December and February, to the warmer sub-tropical waters of Australia for mating and birthing.
While it is not unheard of for whale births to occur during migration, complete documentation of the birthing process itself remains exceedingly rare. Forrest articulated his appreciation for having had the opportunity to witness such an extraordinary natural event, expressing hope that the footage will enhance understanding of marine mammal behaviour for many years to come.
The documentation of this event not only highlights the impressive capabilities of drone technology but also raises awareness of the behaviours of humpback whales, which continue to intrigue researchers and conservationists alike.
