Coast Guard Evacuates Boy, 9, from the Bahamas After He Was Mauled By Stray Dogs on the Beach

A nine-year-old boy was the victim of a brutal dog attack while collecting sand on a beach in Bimini, prompting an urgent medical evacuation back to the United States for further treatment. The incident, which took place around 10 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, has raised significant concern among both local authorities and the community.

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the child was on holiday in Bimini when he ventured to a nearby beach. While he was engaged in gathering sand, he was unexpectedly attacked by a group of dogs, sustaining multiple bite wounds across various parts of his body. The injuries reportedly included wounds to his right thigh, arm, face, head, and left leg.

An unknown man is said to have intervened during the attack, managing to scare off the dogs and allowing the boy to return to his family. It was only after the boy returned to his mother that the gravity of the situation was disclosed. The mother promptly alerted the Alice Town Police Station at approximately 10:26 a.m., requesting immediate assistance.

Upon arrival, police officers found the injured boy with his mother and quickly transported him to the Bimini Community Clinic. Medical personnel there assessed his injuries and deemed his condition serious, with the possibility of life-threatening complications due to the severity of the dog bites.

Given the urgent nature of his injuries, it was decided that the boy required a higher level of medical care than could be provided locally. This necessity led to an emergency evacuation arranged by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard’s Miami Air Station executed the operation, with the boy’s father accompanying him on the flight back to the U.S. for advanced treatment.

Following the arrival at Air Station Miami, emergency medical personnel took over the boy’s care and transported him to a hospital in the area. Footage released by the Coast Guard captured the moment the boy was carefully moved onto a stretcher during the medical evacuation, highlighting the quick response time of the crews involved in the operation.

In a statement, OS2 Christian Delgado, a watchstander with the Southeast District Command Center, praised the efforts of the command team and the Air Station Miami crew. He expressed gratitude for their teamwork, which he noted was instrumental in ensuring the boy received prompt medical care.

Meanwhile, authorities are working diligently to locate the dogs involved in the incident. The Royal Bahamas Police Force has confirmed that they have identified the ownership of the animals. The dogs’ owner is currently cooperating with police as they aim to secure the dogs and have them removed from the area, seeking to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
