Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to petition the United States Supreme Court to reinstate his long-standing lawsuit against his 2016 election opponent, Hillary Clinton. The case, which originally faced dismissal in 2023 by a federal judge, alleges that Clinton and several others conspired to undermine Trump’s campaign by promoting allegations of Russian collusion.

On Tuesday, July 28, Trump’s legal representation submitted a formal request to the Supreme Court for an extension to present their arguments. This move follows a unanimous decision from a federal appeals court in November 2025, which upheld the previous dismissal of the case. A panel of three judges, one of whom was appointed by Trump, referred to the lawsuit as “frivolous” and affirmed a sanction of $1 million against Trump and one of his attorneys for pursuing the litigation.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 29, a spokesperson for Trump’s legal team expressed the former president’s determination to hold accountable those they accuse of engaging in “lies, deception, and fake news” aimed at damaging both Trump and the broader “Make America Great Again” movement.
Hillary Clinton’s legal representative, David Kendall, has opted not to comment publicly on the matter, and her office has not yet responded to requests for a statement. The silence from Clinton’s camp comes as the legal battle adds another layer to the ongoing tensions from the 2016 elections.
Originally, Trump had sought a staggering $70 million in damages through this lawsuit. However, U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks characterised the claim as fundamentally flawed, imposing a $1 million penalty on Trump. Judge Middlebrooks stated in his ruling that the case lacked legal merit and should never have been initiated, noting that “no reasonable lawyer would have filed it.”
Amidst this legal conflict, Trump has expressed mounting frustration with the Supreme Court, particularly following decisions that have negatively impacted his policy goals, such as rulings related to his tariff plans and birthright citizenship. He recently took to his social media platform to assert that the Supreme Court’s adversarial decisions have cost the nation an immense amount in both prestige and finances.
In addition to this legal appeal concerning Clinton, Trump is concurrently seeking relief from the Supreme Court concerning an outstanding debt of nearly $84 million to writer E. Jean Carroll, who has accused him of sexual assault dating back to the 1990s. Trump’s legal team argues that a Supreme Court decision from 2024, which granted presidents immunity for actions conducted while in office, should protect him from liability for a civil jury’s ruling in 2024 that found he defamed Carroll.
As Trump’s legal entanglements continue to evolve, he remains dedicated to his cause of contesting the actions of his political adversaries. The potential Supreme Court ruling could significantly influence how similar cases are approached in the future, especially regarding the accountability of public figures.
This ongoing saga not only highlights the complex interplay between legal proceedings and political strategy but also underscores the lasting repercussions of Trump’s tumultuous presidency on the landscape of American politics. The outcomes of these legal battles may very well shape the political narrative leading into the next election cycle.
