In a recent interview, Gary Goldsmith, the uncle of Catherine, Princess of Wales, spoke candidly about both his health struggles and his admiration for his niece’s courage. Goldsmith expressed his delight over Kate’s remarkable achievement in completing the National Three Peaks Challenge, which she undertook as part of her recovery from cancer. The challenge, which sees participants scale the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours, was a personal mission for the 44-year-old royal, who completed it in June.

Goldsmith commended Kate’s resilience and determination throughout her ordeal with cancer. In his conversation with the Daily Mail, he reflected on her childhood experiences, recalling family trips to the Lake District and how her recent accomplishment felt like a return to those simpler times. “It takes me back to her childhood when they would go to the Lakes,” Goldsmith remarked, adding that the challenge seemed to symbolise a reconnection with nature and her roots.

The National Three Peaks Challenge, consisting of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon, was particularly significant as Kate aimed to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. This initiative focuses on improving access to holistic cancer care for patients across the United Kingdom, highlighting Kate’s commitment to supporting others in similar situations.

In a surprising turn, Goldsmith shared his own health scare that occurred just a year prior. In April 2025, he faced a life-threatening emergency after experiencing severe abdominal pain while celebrating his 60th birthday in Ibiza. Despite a notable change in lifestyle — including giving up alcohol and using a weight loss medication — Goldsmith had indulged during his birthday festivities, which led to a critical health crisis just days later.

Describing the harrowing moment, Goldsmith recounted waking up feeling “terribly sick” and subsequently vomiting blood, prompting him to seek urgent medical assistance. His wife, Julie-Ann, who was in London caring for their pets, facilitated his rapid transportation to a hospital. Upon arrival, he underwent an urgent procedure to treat enlarged veins in his oesophagus — a condition linked to liver disease. Reflecting on the experience, he stated, “If they hadn’t banded me, I would have bled to death.”

Following the operation, which involved surgeons placing bands around the problematic veins, Goldsmith spent 48 hours in intensive care while recovering. His health crisis coincided with a challenging period for both himself and his family, especially as news of Kate’s own battle with cancer had only recently been shared with the public.

Goldsmith disclosed that when he confided in his daughter, Tallulah, about his medical emergency, she promptly informed Carole Middleton, Kate’s mother. Despite the worry of her own daughter’s health struggles, Carole maintained her support for Goldsmith, who expressed gratitude for her maternal concern. He acknowledged that having family members dealing with their own health issues made the situation particularly heavy for them all.

Carole, 71, urged Goldsmith to prioritise his health, advising him to stay active, eat well, and adopt a more balanced approach to life. He reflected fondly on his upbringing with Carole, noting that their close sibling bond was akin to having “two mothers.” Her guidance during this tumultuous time showcased the enduring support that defines their family.

Goldsmith’s participation in the reality show “Celebrity Big Brother” two years ago stirred controversy due to his past conviction for domestic violence. His arrest record raised concerns among advocacy groups, including Women’s Aid, which criticised the decision to feature him on the show alongside survivors of abuse. In 2017, he had pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife during a night out and was subsequently sentenced to a community order and rehabilitation.
