Rosie O’Donnell, the renowned comedian and former talk show host, has spoken candidly about her remarkable weight loss journey, crediting the GLP-1 medication Mounjaro for aiding her in shedding 65 pounds over three years. In a recent interview on the Bleep! With Ana Navarro podcast, she detailed her experience with the medication, which she began taking after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

The 64-year-old entertainer has gradually increased her dosage of Mounjaro since she started treatment. Initially, she commenced with the lowest dose of 2.5 milligrams for a year. Following that, she moved to a 5-milligram dose, and she is currently concluding her year at 7.5 milligrams. O’Donnell revealed her intention to increase the dosage one final time before concluding her treatment altogether. “I wanted to go slow because I know that it overwhelms me when I have lost weight quickly before,” she explained.

O’Donnell’s approach to weight loss contrasts sharply with the experiences of many others. While some individuals face uncomfortable side effects when using weight-loss medications, she stated that she has not encountered any adverse reactions. This revelation took Navarro by surprise, given her own struggle with side effects while on similar treatments. O’Donnell emphasised the importance of her slow and steady approach, which, in her view, has helped her maintain a sense of control over her health.

Widely regarded as a life-changing medication, Mounjaro has been approved for use in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Its active ingredient, tirzepatide, is believed to facilitate weight loss by suppressing appetite, enhancing feelings of satiety, and aiding the body in metabolising sugar and fat. O’Donnell praised what she referred to as “a miracle drug,” expressing her astonishment at the way it has alleviated her constant food cravings.
Reflecting on her lifelong struggle with weight, O’Donnell opened up about the emotional trauma tied to her eating habits. Following the death of her mother in 1973, when O’Donnell was just ten years old, she and her siblings faced difficult circumstances that ultimately led to unhealthy eating patterns. “My father would give us a hundred-dollar bill, and we would go grocery shopping,” she recounted. “At 11 years old, shopping for a family of five, it wasn’t long before everyone got heavy.”
The grief that engulfed her family during that time had a profound impact on their eating habits. She described how, when faced with a limited budget for groceries, the family’s choices often leaned towards less nutritious options. “We would always say, ‘subtotal please,’ and when it got near a hundred dollars, we’d put back the chicken and the hamburger meat,” she shared. O’Donnell expressed how this pivotal moment established a pattern that contributed to her struggles with weight over the years.
O’Donnell’s ongoing commitment to transparency about her health journey reflects her desire to share her story with others who may be grappling with similar challenges. Describing her experience with Mounjaro, she said, “I really wish I could do commercials for Mounjaro and they would drop the price instead of paying me.” Her willingness to discuss her difficulties with weight serves as a source of inspiration for many, as she empathises with those who bear the stigma of obesity.
In concluding her thoughts, O’Donnell highlighted the positive transformation she has experienced since starting her medication. “Today, I feel much healthier and more powerful in my physicality,” she stated. Her journey illustrates the significance of addressing complex emotional and physical challenges in the pursuit of personal well-being.
As discussions around weight management and the associated mental health implications continue to evolve, O’Donnell’s candidness surrounding her experience with Mounjaro underscores the importance of open dialogue. By sharing both her struggles and successes, O’Donnell aims to offer support and understanding to others on their own journeys toward improved health.
