At this event, Prince-Bythewood expressed enthusiasm about the film’s adventurous spirit and the commitment of her cast. The director noted that filming required significant effort as some locations were quite remote. “I gave a heads up that there were some sets that were a three, four hour drive, and then a half-hour walk along treacherous paths,” she shared with a chuckle, highlighting the dedication required to portray the film’s fantasy world authentically.
“Children of Blood and Bone” follows the compelling narrative of Zélie Adebola, portrayed by Thuso Mbedu, a young woman who battles against a repressive regime led by a king who has outlawed magic. Joining her on this journey are her brother Tzain (Tosin Cole) and two royal family members, Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Damson Idris), each grappling with the complexities of their roles within the familial hierarchy and the broader implications surrounding magic.
Set within the fictional realm of Orïsha, the narrative draws inspiration from West African mythology, bringing rich cultural elements to its storytelling. Understanding the importance of an authentic backdrop, Prince-Bythewood opted for real-world locations rather than relying heavily on CGI. This decision was rooted in her desire to create a vibrant, immersive experience that would resonate with audiences. “I wanted to give the actors this 360-degree world to play in, and I didn’t want them to be surrounded by green screens,” she stated.
Filming took place primarily in South Africa and the Canary Islands throughout 2025, where production designer Hannah Beachler, known for her noteworthy contributions to “Black Panther,” played an integral role in crafting the visual landscape of Orïsha. The duo explored various locations, including palaces in Ethiopia and sites reminiscent of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, to ensure the film reflected the richness of the African tapestry, honouring elements from the broader African diaspora.
The collaborative spirit during the production phase was evident, with Prince-Bythewood mentioning the depth of discussions aimed at weaving cultural elements into the magic depicted in the film. “The conversations that we had were just really beautiful because we’re creating a fantasy world,” she explained. “How do we make magic feel cultural?”
Mbedu appreciated Prince-Bythewood’s hands-on approach, describing her willingness to engage with the cast during the challenging scouting missions. “One of my favourite things about Gina is her want to be a part of whatever it is that we’re experiencing,” Mbedu remarked, emphasizing the bond formed between the director and the cast throughout their journey.
Despite the arduous travel involved in finding suitable shooting locations, Prince-Bythewood remains a staunch advocate for the awe that comes with discovering breathtaking sites. She reflected on these experiences, stating, “You get to this waterfall that you’ve never seen before, or you’re in this environment that no one’s shot before that is literally a million years old. It’s an insane thing to be able to experience.”
