Since his diagnosis in January 2022, Lazar has faced significant challenges due to the debilitating effects of ALS, a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The illness has gradually robbed him of his ability to move, speak, eat, and even breathe independently. Now, he relies on a BiPAP machine and a full-time caregiver to assist him with daily tasks, which presents a considerable financial burden.
The annual cost of Lazar’s essential ALS treatment reaches an eye-watering £300,000, prompting his family and friends to initiate a GoFundMe campaign designed to help alleviate some of these expenses. In his Instagram video, Lazar conveyed his gratitude to those who have contributed, whether their donations were a modest £10 or a generous £10,000.

“The response has been extraordinary,” Lazar stated, emphasising the importance of community support during this difficult time. The father of two acknowledged the crucial role his family, particularly his brother, played in launching the fundraising effort alongside close friends. He praised the Broadway community, stating, “Broadway’s got my back, and they have throughout this entire journey.”
Among those who have generously contributed to the fund is renowned singer Barry Manilow, who donated £10,000. Lazar expressed his appreciation for Manilow, with whom he has previously performed, acknowledging the significance of the singer’s support amidst his struggles.

In addition to financial donations, tributes and messages of encouragement have flooded in from fellow performers and friends in the Broadway community. Kelli Barrett, a Broadway veteran, posted a heartfelt comment on Lazar’s Instagram, affirming that a “village” of support stands behind him. Similarly, Tony Award winner Donna Murphy and Broadway star Laura Osnes shared their love and encouragement, reflecting the strong bond that exists within the theatrical community.
Despite the gravity of his situation, Lazar remains optimistic and motivated by the outpouring of love and support. “Thanks to your love and support, I can do that now, with more safety, more joy, more gratitude,” he remarked, underscoring the transformative impact of collective generosity.
Lazar’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength found in community, especially during times of adversity. The GoFundMe campaign has not only highlighted his struggle but has also showcased the incredible resilience of both Lazar and his supporters. As the campaign nears its fundraising goal, the Broadway community continues to rally around him, ensuring he has the necessary resources and support to navigate the challenges ahead.
As Lazar battles this disease, the support and kindness he has received will undoubtedly be a source of comfort and strength. “ALS takes a village,” he concluded, reinforcing the idea that together we can overcome even the toughest of trials.
