The highly anticipated stage adaptation of “Purple Rain” is set to premiere on Broadway in March 2027, marking an exciting chapter for fans of Prince’s iconic film and music. With preview performances scheduled to commence on March 12, 2027, the production will officially open at the Majestic Theatre in New York City on April 12. Drumming up interest in the project, producer Orin Wolf shared the latest details on Monday, confirming that the adaptation will bring to life many of Prince’s most beloved songs.
The direction of the musical is in the capable hands of Tony Award nominee Saheem Ali, known for his work on projects such as “Buena Vista Social Club.” Replacing the previously announced Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, playwright Peter Duchan has penned the book for the adaptation, bringing his previous experience from “Dogfight” into the new production. Notably, Emmy Award winner Ebony Williams, recognised for her choreography in “Sneakerella,” will curate the movement for the show.
Much like the original film, the musical follows the story of The Kid, an aspiring musician navigating the complexities of the Minneapolis club scene while grappling with challenges in his home life, competition from rival bands, and romantic entanglements. Attendees can expect to hear over 20 of Prince’s legendary songs, showcasing tracks from the film’s acclaimed soundtrack, including “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and the title track, “Purple Rain.”
Music supervision and orchestration will be overseen by Jason Michael Webb, who recently earned acclaim for his work on “MJ the Musical.” Prince’s longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes will act as musical advisers, ensuring that the production remains faithful to the artist’s unique sound. Details regarding the casting of the musical are expected to be revealed in due course.
The announcement of “Purple Rain’s” Broadway run coincided with a significant moment in cinema history, celebrating the film’s release over four decades ago. Throughout his career, he amassed a staggering collection of over 150 million records sold, garnered seven Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. His prominence in the film industry continued with projects such as “Under the Cherry Moon” in 1986, where he made his directorial debut, and the 1990 sequel “Graffiti Bridge,” which he also wrote and directed.
Orin Wolf, in a statement reflecting on Prince’s exceptional talent, praised the musician as “one of the rarest, most brilliant musicians” of his time. He expressed enthusiasm for the creative team’s collaboration, emphasising that their work will bring a fresh perspective to Prince’s music, aiming to resonate with both new audiences and those who first embraced the songs in their younger years.
