In a candid discussion on her podcast, “Katie Lee Kitchen,” hosted by television personality Katie Lee Biegel, the 44-year-old chef and author shared some enlightening stories from her early days working at a fish market in Sag Harbor. Biegel recounted her first celebrity customer, comedian Jon Stewart, highlighting their positive interaction during a summer that would shape her experiences in the Hamptons.

Biegel revealed that Stewart was a standout among many customers she was to serve that summer in 2003. “He could not have been lovelier,” she expressed. “He was so nice. He was patient with me.” This warmth was a notable contrast to the sometimes brusque attitudes she encountered from other patrons.
During their exchange, Biegel greeted Stewart with a friendly, “Hi, how are you?” to which he responded with genuine interest, asking her how she was in return. This small yet significant moment left a lasting impression on her. “I had many customers that summer that I would say, ‘Hi, how are you?’ and would get a curt, ‘I’m just looking.’ So, I always remembered those who were kind, and Jon Stewart was certainly one of them.”
In stark contrast, Biegel recounted an unfavourable encounter with fellow comedian Chevy Chase at a social gathering. She described a rather awkward incident at a party held at her own home, where Chase mistook her for a member of the staff. With her tray of jello shots in hand, she approached the actor and offered him a drink. Instead of responding graciously, Chase took it upon himself to wave her away dismissively, believing she was merely serving at the event.
“It was a very star-studded party,” Biegel recalled. “My ex-husband was speaking with Chevy Chase and his wife when I approached with the jello shots. Chevy thought I was part of the staff and shooed me away.” This encounter serves as a reminder of the varied experiences celebrities can bring into the lives of those they meet.
Biegel’s contrasting experiences with Stewart and Chase highlight the impact both positive and negative interactions with high-profile individuals can have on personal memories. She clearly cherishes the kind recollections with Stewart while the unpleasant encounter with Chase stands out as a surprising twist from the night.
Reflecting on her past, Biegel’s candid storytelling offers a glimpse into her life before the spotlight fully embraced her. The chef has enjoyed a notable career, which has included a previous marriage to music icon Billy Joel. The pair, who first crossed paths in 2002, married in 2004 but later divorced in 2009.
Since then, Biegel has found love again with television producer Ryan Biegel. The couple tied the knot in 2018 and have since built a life together. The journey of her personal relationships and her professional growth serves as an inspiration to many who follow her story.
As she shares these snapshots of her past, Biegel subtly encourages listeners to remember the importance of kindness, regardless of fame or celebrity status. Whether working behind a fish counter or hosting a party, the impact of a gracious interaction can resonate for years.
Through her podcast and public appearances, Biegel continues to connect with audiences, weaving together lessons learned from her experiences and the individuals she encounters, both famous and otherwise. Her stories remind us all that kindness has a lasting effect, highlighting the significance of treating others with respect.
