Cracker Barrel has announced a significant change in its leadership, with CEO Julia Masino stepping down amid widespread criticism surrounding recent branding changes. The announcement, made on July 27, follows a tumultuous period for the popular American restaurant chain that saw it overhaul its logo and restaurant decor.

Masino’s departure comes after a controversial redesign of the brand’s logo in 2025, which aimed to modernise the iconic imagery associated with Cracker Barrel. The revamped logo dropped the familiar “Old Timer” illustration, a decision that drew backlash from loyal customers. Notably, the former President Donald Trump remarked that Cracker Barrel could improve its public image by reverting to the previous design. Just days after revealing the new logo, the company opted to revert to the classic design, acknowledging the overwhelming sentiment from patrons.

In addition to the logo controversy, Cracker Barrel faced criticism for its plans to remodel its restaurants. The chain sought to replace its traditional brown decor and rustic farm tools with modern light fixtures and a fresh white aesthetic, set to roll out in 2024. However, customer feedback was predominantly unfavourable, with many describing the proposed changes as “bland.” In response, a spokesperson for Cracker Barrel asserted in August 2025 that the initial reception to the remodels had been positive, emphasising the brand was adhering to its commitment to listen to customer feedback.
Despite these reassurances, the company suspended its renovation plans in September 2025, admitting that the modern design did not resonate with the brand’s loyal fan base. This decision underscored the critical importance of the customer relationship and the historical aesthetic that defines the Cracker Barrel experience.
The company’s recent financial performance has also been less than desirable. During a December 2025 investor call, Masino indicated that Cracker Barrel had faced a “difficult” few months, with revenue declining by 5.7% compared to the same quarter in the previous year. Masino acknowledged the need to restore the faith of customers, stating, “We have a brand reputation issue that we are working through.” Her comments reflected a commitment to restoring trust and rebuilding the brand image, alongside reinstating popular menu items that had resonated with customers before the recent upheaval.
In a candid assessment of her role, Masino expressed her frustration during an appearance on The Glenn Beck Podcast in November 2025, claiming, “I feel like I’ve been fired by America.” Her dedication to the brand, she asserted, stemmed from her desire to cultivate a loving relationship between Cracker Barrel and its patrons.
Following Masino’s exit, David Deno, the former CEO of Bloomin’ Brands—which operates restaurants such as Outback Steakhouse—has been appointed as her successor, effective from August 10. Deno brings extensive experience in the restaurant industry as well as a strong financial background from his previous role at Yum! Brands. In his statement, Deno described Cracker Barrel as an “iconic American brand,” expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead the team and unlock its potential.
In a nod to Masino’s contributions, Deno expressed gratitude for her leadership during this transitional phase, noting she would remain in an advisory role until October 9 to assist with the changeover. A spokesperson for Cracker Barrel remarked that Deno’s extensive experience in driving financial performance would be instrumental in providing direction for the company’s future.
The board of Cracker Barrel conducted a thorough search for Deno’s successor, ensuring the chosen leader would possess the capabilities needed to navigate both operational challenges and enhance shareholder value. As the brand moves forward with this new leadership, it will be tasked with the critical challenge of re-establishing its connection with customers while restoring its legacy in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
With Deno at the helm, Cracker Barrel aims to move beyond recent controversies and focus on maintaining its status as a beloved establishment that celebrates American hospitality and tradition. The chain’s success in overcoming these hurdles will depend significantly on its ability to adapt to customer preferences while remaining true to its foundational values.
