The 26-year-old bride shared the unexpected ordeal with PEOPLE, recounting how a series of symptoms led her to urgent care just hours after tying the knot with her husband, Joel Goodrich, in Hillsboro, Ohio.

Goodrich recalls that her special day began smoothly. The ceremony at the Ivory Grande venue unfolded without a hitch, and everything from the arrangements to the decor was nothing short of beautiful. “I thought to myself, ‘This is going too perfect,’” she said, reflecting on the day leading up to dinner and dancing.
However, soon after dinner, while the couple ventured outside for some additional photographs, things began to change. “About ten minutes into the photos, I started sneezing,” Goodrich recalled. Initially dismissing the sneezes as a minor annoyance, she soon discovered they were the onset of an alarming allergic reaction. As her sneezing escalated, her symptoms grew worse, manifesting as watery eyes and an itchy throat.
Familiar with her seasonal allergies, Goodrich initially thought an allergy pill could alleviate her discomfort. “We went inside to get an allergy pill, but they continued to get worse,” she explained. It became evident that this was more serious than typical allergy flare-ups. Hives began to form, and her throat felt increasingly constricted, prompting her and her husband to make the decision to seek urgent medical attention.
“The moment my throat became itchy and my voice started to go hoarse, we knew we had to go to urgent care,” Goodrich said. Upon arriving, she learned that the facility did not have an EpiPen on hand, but they administered a steroid shot to help ease her symptoms. They monitored her closely for any signs of further complications.
Fortunately, the treatment proved effective, as Goodrich reported that her breathing normalised and her voice returned to its usual state. After an hour and a half away from her reception, she was cleared to rejoin her guests. “It was honestly iconic, and we kept the party going,” she added enthusiastically.
During her brief absence, her husband stayed by her side, though the stress of the situation was evident. “He was scared but handled it very well,” Goodrich remarked, praising Joel’s ability to remain calm amidst the growing concern. Meanwhile, their bridal party managed the situation discreetly, aiming to keep other guests at ease while the couple sought help.
Despite some attendees leaving due to the delay, Goodrich remains optimistic about the wedding experience. She and Joel are considering a re-reception next year to celebrate properly with their friends and family, acknowledging that their first celebration was unexpectedly interrupted.
