College Athlete Revived with 34 Doses of Antivenom After Rattlesnake Bite

A 22-year-old college athlete from California, Jake Entrup, has undergone a harrowing medical ordeal after suffering a rattlesnake bite while hiking in Claremont. The incident occurred on July 18 along the Wilderness Park trails, close to Higginbotham Park, where Entrup was enjoying a day out with his mother and their two dogs.

Entrup recounted the shocking moment he was bitten. He had just turned a corner on the trail when he was struck by the snake. “I looked down and saw the fang marks. When I turned around, I saw the snake hiss at me before it slithered off into the bush,” he explained in a subsequent interview. The suddenness of the encounter left him startled, but fortunately, he was not alone; a nearby nurse quickly rushed to his aid.

According to reports, the nurse’s intervention played a crucial role in stabilising Entrup before he was airlifted to the Pomona Valley Trauma Centre. The urgency of the situation escalated as he required a staggering 34 doses of antivenom to counteract the venom that coursed through his body.

Entrup described the severity of his condition, stating, “Within the first two minutes, I put my hand in front of my face and could not see it.” Initial treatment involved administering 20 doses of antivenom at Pomona Valley, but when the hospital’s supply ran short, Entrup was transported by ambulance to LA County General, where he received an additional 14 doses.

Currently, Entrup remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is said to be in stable condition. However, he faces a lengthy recovery process. As a committed college athlete who has recently pledged to play baseball at the collegiate level, he is now contending with the reality of being sidelined from both sports and work. Entrup had been juggling double shifts to cover his tuition fees, and it is anticipated that he will be unable to work for several weeks due to his injuries.

Supporting Entrup through this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched, aiming to alleviate some of his financial burden by covering medical costs and lost wages. As of now, the fundraiser has successfully raised over £3,000 of its £4,000 target, showcasing the community’s solidarity during this challenging period.

Following the incident, Entrup has expressed his desire for caution among fellow hikers, particularly in rattlesnake-prone areas. “I would be very cautious of your surroundings. In that moment, it can seem scary, but you want to keep yourself as calm as possible,” he advised, highlighting the importance of remaining vigilant while outdoors.

The Mayo Clinic has shared guiding principles for those who find themselves in similar situations, stressing the importance of seeking immediate medical attention. They discourage various actions that could worsen the situation, advising against using a tourniquet or ice, cutting the bite, or consuming any substances that could exacerbate bleeding. Instead, they recommend that bite victims may consider taking acetaminophen for pain relief while awaiting professional help.

As Entrup embarks on his recovery journey, the community continues to rally behind him, underscoring the importance of communal support in the face of adversity. While the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, the young athlete remains focused on his goals, aiming to push through his recovery and resume his academic and athletic pursuits.
