Pack, drawing from his extensive experience in the field, emphasised that genuine kidnappers typically seek to maintain communication to facilitate the negotiation process and ensure a secure payment. “A note that says ‘you will not be able to contact me’ and ‘there will be no negotiation’ works against the extortionist’s own interest if the aim is financial gain,” he explained.
He further speculated that the author of the note might instead be more interested in instilling fear and asserting control, rather than simply pursuing monetary gain. “This kind of language suggests a desire for power and finality rather than a transaction,” Pack added, indicating that such demands often raise red flags for trained negotiators.
In contrast to the first note, a second message revealed by crime journalist Briana Whitney during a recent episode of the Crime Junkie podcast took on a different tone, claiming that Guthrie had “perished shortly after she was taken” due to what was described as “heart-related” issues. This statement raised concerns for the Guthrie family, who have previously noted that Nancy had health complications and was without her medication at the time of her disappearance.
As of now, no arrests have been made related to Nancy Guthrie’s case, leaving family, friends, and the community in a state of uncertainty. Pack highlighted the emotional toll that such a prolonged investigation can impose on families. “I can’t imagine what the Guthrie family is enduring — the relentless uncertainty and the anxiety of waiting for answers,” he observed. “The pain they experience doesn’t lessen as time goes on, and their frustration is entirely justified.”
