Cassie Donegan, the reigning Miss America, has opened up about the intense online backlash she faced following her performance of “God Bless America” at the MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia on 14 July 2026. The 28-year-old singer expressed her excitement at being part of such a significant event but was disheartened by the vitriol aimed at her appearance shortly after she took the stage.
Donegan described the occasion as a momentous one, not just for her personally, but also for her family, particularly her father, a 100% disabled veteran who accompanied her. “Getting to do that as Miss America, at America’s pastime, during the 250th anniversary, singing a song that honours our nation, I was nothing but excited,” she stated in an interview with PEOPLE magazine.
However, within an hour of her performance, Donegan was met with critical comments across social media platforms. Many directed their ire at her weight, makeup, and even questioned her gender identity. “I never imagined that a 10-second clip would result in such hateful comments, including extreme messages urging me to end my life,” she revealed.
While Donegan initially tried to disregard the negative feedback, she soon realised the impact it was having on her students—particularly a young 13-year-old aspiring musical theatre performer who expressed concerns about pursuing her dreams in light of the hostility her teacher faced. “That’s when I knew I had a responsibility to say something,” Donegan remarked, acknowledging that the effects of the bullying extended beyond her.
On 15 July, Donegan took to Instagram to address the situation, remarking on the “malicious content” that had surfaced. “Somewhere, a little girl is watching the way we speak about women and learning how she is supposed to view herself,” she posted, calling for a shift in how women are portrayed and discussed in public discourse.
“I never want a young girl or a woman to feel that they need to change in any way,” she continued. Donegan emphasised that societal pressures should not dictate one’s self-worth or aspirations. “When a woman’s appearance becomes a subject of public ridicule, everyone absorbs that message,” she said.
Following her MLB performance, Donegan attended a leadership conference for Best Buddies, a non-profit focused on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She admitted to feeling anxious about her appearance, worried that negative attention could detract from the focus of the event. Despite some unfortunate comments, she expressed gratitude for the “delete button” that helped manage hostile feedback.
Donegan clarified her motivations for speaking out on her experience: “I don’t need an apology or validation from strangers. What I hope for is that when people have the chance to tear someone down, they choose a different path.”
