A New Zealand fishing influencer, Henry Gibbs, recently shared a harrowing experience following a shark attack while diving in Fiji earlier this month. On July 24, Gibbs took to Instagram for the first time in two weeks, providing an update on his condition and expressing his gratitude for the support he has received since the incident.

In his post, which was accompanied by several images from his hospital room, Gibbs detailed the frightening encounter. He described how his first dive in Fiji resulted in a “pretty nasty shark incident.” Fortunately, his companions managed to pull him from the water promptly after the attack, enabling him to receive urgent medical care.

The injuries sustained during the incident were severe enough to necessitate four surgical procedures, as well as a skin graft on his right leg, which bore the brunt of the shark bite. Despite the trauma of the event and the extensive medical treatment required, Gibbs remains optimistic about his recovery. “It’s looking like I’ll make a full recovery, which I’m hugely grateful for,” he wrote on social media.

Reflecting on the experience, Gibbs displayed a commendable perspective towards the shark that attacked him. He expressed that he harbours “no hard feelings” for the creature, acknowledging that he was in its habitat and hunting its prey. “Wrong place, wrong time,” Gibbs noted, indicating that he intends to share lessons learned from the encounter in future posts, along with footage of the incident to help others avoid similar situations.
In a heartfelt message to his followers, Gibbs thanked everyone who reached out to him since the attack, both in Fiji and back home in New Zealand. “The support has honestly meant a lot,” he shared. He conveyed a renewed sense of appreciation for life, stating, “For now, just feeling very lucky and with an even greater appreciation for life. Cheers.”
Gibbs has developed a substantial following on social media, with over 100,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok. Known for sharing captivating content from his fishing adventures both in New Zealand and abroad, he aims to inspire his audience through his posts. In a TikTok video from earlier this year, he remarked, “At the end of the day, if my content could put a smile on your face—or even inspire you to get out there and do something yourself—then that’s a huge win in my book.”
The incident has undoubtedly placed Gibbs in the spotlight, not only for his recovery journey but also for the valuable insights he plans to share with his audience regarding ocean safety and shark encounters. As Gibbs moves forward from this traumatic experience, it is clear that he intends to use his platform to raise awareness and educate others about the realities of marine life interactions.
While the scars on his leg may serve as a reminder of the close call with danger, Gibbs’s upbeat attitude and determination to remain an active presence on social media highlight his resilience. His story underscores the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of safety awareness, especially in the waters frequented by both recreational divers and marine creatures alike.
As Gibbs navigates his path to recovery, his followers will undoubtedly be eager to hear more about his experience. He has pledged to share further updates, insights from the ordeal, and lessons learned from the unexpected encounter with the shark. His narrative serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty and risks inherent in pursuing outdoor adventures, particularly in the ocean’s depths.
