Caroline Sacks, a 30-year-old resident, has managed her dairy allergy for three decades without the need for an EpiPen—until a recent dinner date took a drastic turn, resulting in an ambulance ride and her first experience with the life-saving device.
Reflecting on her long history of food allergies, Sacks recounted how, until now, her episodes had been manageable through antihistamines. She had experienced numerous allergic reactions since childhood, but none had escalated to anaphylaxis. However, during an evening out, everything changed when a seemingly innocent meal turned into a medical emergency.

The couple had opted for a new restaurant after discovering their fridge was empty. Upon arrival, they informed the hostess of Sacks’ dairy allergy and inquired whether the chef could prepare their signature dish without any dairy products. Assured that their meal could be made safely, Sacks felt confident as she and her fiancé settled down to dine.

“I’ve had more reactions than I can count, but I had never reached anaphylaxis, so I did not carry an EpiPen,” she explained. As the couple enjoyed their meal, Sacks believed they had taken the necessary precautions. The staff reassured them that all dishes were dairy-free, prompting Sacks to express gratitude towards the attentive service.
However, signs of trouble began soon after they left the restaurant. Sacks experienced an itching sensation on her tongue and, suspecting minor cross-contamination, took some Benadryl. Unfortunately, her symptoms quickly deteriorated. Her lips and tongue began to swell, hives developed across her chest, and she felt an uncomfortable tightening in her throat.
Realising that the situation was escalating, they made a stop at a nearby pharmacy for more Benadryl and contacted Sacks’ father, a physician. His assessment was immediate: they needed to call for an ambulance as her condition required urgent intervention. “The Benadryl wasn’t going to cut it,” she recalled.
Before the ambulance arrived, firefighters were the first responders and promptly administered oxygen while monitoring her symptoms. Sacks tried to lighten the mood, joking about her swollen lips resembling lip filler enhancements in an attempt to ease the tension of the moment.
Once the emergency medical team arrived, they administered the EpiPen, which quickly counteracted her severe allergic reaction, albeit with some intense side effects. “I had an elevated heart rate, was seeing stars, and found it difficult to sit up straight,” she admitted.
Following standard procedure, she was transferred to the emergency room for evaluation. Although she was relieved to learn that one dose of the EpiPen had sufficed, the experience clearly left an impact. Later that evening, she was released but with a newfound urgency regarding the management of her allergy.
The following day, Sacks and her fiancé returned to the restaurant to discuss the incident. The staff members, visibly shaken by the news, offered to cover the ambulance costs and even invited them back for a complimentary meal, although Sacks expressed her certainty that they would not be returning. “We appreciated the gesture, but we definitely won’t be going back,” she noted.
This unnerving encounter has prompted Sacks to reassess her approach to her allergy management. Emergency room doctors warned her that adult allergies could become more severe over time. She is now advocating for others in similar situations to consult with an allergist and consider carrying an EpiPen, stressing that even if individuals have not experienced severe reactions in years, their allergies may still pose a significant risk.
“I’m young, social, and a huge foodie,” she said, expressing her desire not to compromise her love for dining out. “Now I’m just a foodie with a bigger purse because I’m never leaving the house without my EpiPen ever again.”
Her experience has sparked conversations on social media, particularly through her TikTok post documenting the frightening episode. She highlights a common misconception that food allergies are often outgrown, reminding her audience that many people live with severe allergies into adulthood.
“It’s often assumed that these allergies are just a ‘kid thing’ that can be outgrown, but many won’t. I promise it won’t hinder anyone from leading a full and spontaneous life,” Sacks emphasised, encouraging restaurant staff to take every allergy request seriously.
Through her experience, Caroline Sacks aims to raise awareness about the seriousness of food allergies, advocating for a more informed and proactive approach to allergy management, regardless of age.
