Jason Lewis, well-known for his role in *Sex and the City*, has recently shared insights into his ambitious project: a nine-book fantasy series that began its conceptualisation before the COVID-19 pandemic. During a conversation on the *Are You a Charlotte?* podcast hosted by Kristin Davis, Lewis reflected on how his move to Costa Rica and the subsequent lockdowns became pivotal moments for his creative process.

The 55-year-old actor revealed that he began outlining his book series in September, just prior to the world being significantly affected by the pandemic. “For me, COVID was an obsessive opportunity to figure out the arc of nine different books. I had Post-It notes on the ceiling and everything,” he remarked, highlighting the intensity of his focus during those months.

Prior to embarking on this writing venture, Lewis had garnered experience penning scripts over the years, but he admitted to being hesitant about sharing his work publicly. “My inner critic never really let me share,” he confessed, explaining how he struggled with self-doubt and the feeling that his writing fell short when compared to classic literature.

Initially considering writing a screenplay for his fantasy series, Lewis eventually realised that a novel format was essential to fully realise the expansive world he envisioned. “To create the world that’s in my head, I needed to write it as a novel,” he stated. This determination illustrates his commitment to ensuring that his vision was authentically represented on the page.

When asked about his fondness for fantasy as a genre, Lewis confirmed that his passion for storytelling dates back to his childhood. “I’ve always been a story lover. I mean, I worked in libraries. As a kid, I’d go to the movies by myself. So, I’m an old-style geek,” he reminisced. His diverse literary interests span various genres, with influences ranging from the works of Hemingway to dark fantasy authors like Joe Abercrombie and, of course, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Lewis elaborated on his series, revealing that while he has outlined nine books, he is currently focusing on the first. He teased a bit about the setting, stating, “It’s not Earth. It’s human-like people. It’s a different universe.” This hints at the richly imagined world that awaits readers in his forthcoming work.

As for the writing process itself, Lewis is already undergoing significant revisions. He is currently on the fourth draft of the seventh book, impressively starting from the conclusion and then rediscovering the narrative threads that lead to that finale. “I needed that focus and dedication to craft. Right now, it’s an 800-page book,” he disclosed, emphasising the importance of building a solid foundation for his narrative.

By opting to write a novel instead of a screenplay, Lewis gained the freedom to retain control over his story. He expressed satisfaction with this decision, as it allows him to release his work without the constraints that often accompany screenwriting, where projects might be optioned and subjected to external influences. “If I write a novel, I can release that and continue to develop my idea for as far as I want,” he explained, underscoring the creative autonomy this format provides.
