Delta Pilot Landing in New York City Warned to ‘Use Extreme Caution’ Following False Rocket Launcher Report

A Delta Air Lines flight faced a potentially alarming situation as it approached LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday, July 21. Just before landing, the aircraft was issued a warning about a reported “man-portable air-defence system,” commonly known as MANPAD, near Terminal C, prompting heightened caution from the crew.

The incident unfolded around 8:00 p.m. local time when Delta flight 2604, which had departed from Detroit and was carrying 182 passengers, was in its final approach. An air traffic controller communicated the urgent alert to the pilots, advising them to exercise “extreme caution” as the situation developed.

In an audio recording obtained by aviation news outlet ATC.com, the pilot sought clarification regarding the alert, asking for an explanation of what a MANPAD entails. The air traffic controller succinctly clarified that it is essentially an anti-aircraft rocket launcher, confirming that the warning stemmed from a report by the Port Authority Police that described sightings near Terminal C.

As the situation evolved, the controller remarked that there were conflicting reports regarding the threat, but assured the pilots that no immediate danger had surfaced. Approximately a minute later, the controller updated the pilots stating that the Port Authority Police had determined the threat to be non-credible, allowing the flight to proceed without further concern.

The aircraft was cleared to land successfully, and tracking data from FlightAware indicated that Delta flight 2604 did not alter its course during the approach. Notably, passengers aboard the flight remained blissfully unaware of the incident and its potential implications.

According to a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the initial report had been made by an anonymous caller, who claimed to be located at the end of a runway armed with a “rocket-propelled grenade” and threatening to shoot down a plane. In response to this alarming claim, authorities immediately initiated a thorough investigation of the area to ascertain the validity of the threat.

Following a detailed search, law enforcement officials confirmed that the concern was unfounded. Nevertheless, the Port Authority has indicated that the event is still under investigation, as they seek to understand the circumstances surrounding the troubling call.
