A tragic incident on the Elk River near Noel, Missouri, led to the untimely death of 24-year-old Fred Marsh, an officer with the Rogers Police Department. The officer’s demise marked a heart-wrenching turn of events just hours after he proposed to his fiancée, Hailey Lummus, on Saturday, July 18.

Fred Marsh had been enjoying a canoeing trip with Lummus, a colleague, and the colleague’s spouse when the outing took a dire turn. The group was navigating the river when Lummus found herself in distress while attempting to return to safety. According to reports, as she struggled, her fiancé attempted to assist, bravely joining the rescue effort. However, in doing so, Marsh encountered strong currents that ultimately led to his disappearance beneath the water.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed the details in an incident report that highlighted Marsh’s valiant attempt to save Lummus. Following an extensive search, he was pronounced dead early the next morning, on Sunday, July 19 at 10:08 a.m. The news reverberated through the local community and beyond, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes.

Rogers Police Chief Jonathan Best expressed profound sorrow over the loss, acknowledging Marsh’s dedication and enthusiasm for his role as a police officer. The department released an official statement that further underscored his commitment to serving others, a testament to his character.

In the wake of the tragedy, Hailey Lummus’ mother, Sheryl Padgett, shared poignant reflections on her daughter’s relationship with Marsh. The couple had enjoyed three wonderful years together, and Padgett described their bond as “very beautiful and loving.” She expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that, although Marsh was not her son-in-law in title, he would forever hold a place as her son in her heart.

The tragic event unfolded as Lummus attempted to return from the water. Despite the couple’s efforts, the situation escalated quickly. Padgett recounted how Marsh jumped in to help as his fiancée was pushed towards a nearby canoe. Tragically, he became ensnared in the river’s current and failed to resurface. Eyewitnesses reported that fellow members of the group and others present on the river attempted to rescue him but were unable to reach him in time.

A solemn tribute followed Marsh’s passing, as a motorcade escorted his body through the Northwest Arkansas region on July 20. The community turned out en masse to pay their respects, with family, friends, and colleagues joining together in mourning. They recognised him not merely as an officer but as a young man who displayed immense courage in trying to save another.

Chris Frye, Marsh’s cousin, affirmed the heroism displayed by the young officer, stating, “He gave his life to save someone else.” He highlighted that Marsh’s selflessness in the face of danger was in true accordance with the principles of policing, where the welfare of others often comes before one’s own safety.

Meanwhile, Corporal Don Lisi of the Rogers Police Department noted the difficulty in processing the loss. He fondly remembered Marsh as someone who made a significant positive impact during his time with the force, emphasising the deep sense of loss felt by his colleagues.

To support Lummus and cover the costs incurred following this tragic event, Kourtlin Ricketts, Lummus’s sister, initiated a GoFundMe campaign. She characterised Marsh as “an upstanding young man” who held multiple roles in life — as a son, fiancé, officer, brother, and friend. The fundraising effort revealed the profound effect Marsh had on those around him, and the community’s commitment to rallying support in the wake of this devastating loss continues to grow.
