Anka, who found success at the tender age of 15, remarked on the similarities between their experiences. He noted that when Bieber’s career took off in Canada, media outlets juxtaposed photographs of the two, emphasising their shared roots. “When Justin hit, it was all over Canada. The paper had a picture of me and a picture of him, cause we both live here. So there was a comparison,” he explained.

The singer’s career commenced when he left Canada to pursue music, leading to numerous hits such as “Diana” and “Lonely Boy.” Anka was taken under the wing of the famed Rat Pack during his 20s, where he penned classics like Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” Anka recalled his initial aspirations, stating, “I was a young kid with this dream. I didn’t have any great looks. I didn’t have any height. I was an athlete, but it stopped because then I stopped growing. So, I found something that really turned my life upside down.”
Despite the whirlwind of fame that enveloped him, Anka credited his family for keeping him grounded throughout his rise. He spoke fondly of his upbringing and the support he received from his parents, particularly highlighting the bond he had with his mother, who passed away when he was just 18. “I had a good upbringing, I had a great father. I had a great mother, you know, who was an ally of mine. That was the toughest part of my life,” he said. Anka’s reflections underscore the essential role his family played in helping him maintain perspective amid the chaos of celebrity life.
In addition to discussing his early career, Anka touched on his personal life, including his experience with marriage and the decision to embrace solitude in his later years. He expressed a sense of fulfilment in being single, stating, “I’ve done the married thing. I’ll take all the good from it, some of the bad.” Anka described his current state of life as one of peace and tranquility, appreciating the opportunity to grow older gracefully.
Throughout his life, Anka has been married three times. His first marriage was to model Anne de Zogheb from 1963 until their divorce in 2001. The couple shares five daughters: Alexandra, Amanda, Alicia, Anthea, and Amelia. His second marriage was to Anna Åberg in 2008, which lasted only two years and resulted in the birth of their son, Ethan. Following a legal battle for custody, Anka won full custody of Ethan in 2017. He later married Lisa Pemberton from 2016 to 2020.
The legendary artist’s ability to maintain a sense of normalcy amid fame, coupled with his appreciation for solitude, highlights a positive outlook on life after decades in the public eye. As he reflects on his journey from teenage stardom to the present day, Anka serves as a reminder of the value of family support and personal contentment.
In a world where many aspiring artists find themselves swept up in the allure of fame, Anka’s story presents a nuanced perspective. His experiences resonate with those navigating similar paths, showcasing the importance of understanding one’s roots and the strength that family can provide in the face of adversity.
As Anka continues to share his experiences, he remains an enduring figure in the music industry, celebrating a career that has spanned multiple generations. His journey from a young dreamer to a seasoned artist offers not only inspiration for aspiring musicians but also valuable life lessons for anyone seeking to balance ambition with personal wellbeing.
