2 Children Die in Boating Accident While Spending Time with Family: Report

Tragedy struck in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, on Sunday, 19 July, when two young children lost their lives in a boating accident. The victims, a nine-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy, were reportedly spending time with their grandparents when the incident occurred. At approximately 9 PM local time, the tragic accident unfolded as a 30-foot Tidewater Custom vessel, driven by 63-year-old Stephen Schneider of Bayville, collided with a channel marker. The impact of the crash was severe enough to throw both children from the boat into the water. Their condition was later described as unresponsive when they were discovered by the adults on board.

Laurie Schneider, 64, also from Bayville, was present on the boat during the incident. Following the collision, she and her partner attempted to locate the children in the water. After being rescued, both children were transported to a nearby hospital but were subsequently pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

James Byrnes, a councilman from Berkeley Township, witnessed the distressing scene and recounted the swift response from emergency services. “The firemen jumped right in,” he stated during an interview with News 12 New Jersey. He noted that one of the children had a life jacket nearby, although it was removed while resuscitation efforts were underway.

The loss has deeply affected the local community, with numerous residents expressing their sorrow over the tragic event. Michelle Monticello, a local resident who visited the site to pay her respects, shared her feelings about the incident. “It’s a very tight community, feeling very disheartened, very sad,” she remarked, highlighting the close-knit nature of the area.

While the exact relationship between the children and the adults on the boat was initially unclear, subsequent reports confirmed that Stephen and Laurie Schneider were indeed the grandparents of the two victims. This familial connection has further intensified the community’s grief, as many residents rally around the family in this time of profound loss.
