Durham and her friends undertook the impressive 20-mile trek after months of preparation and securing the elusive permits required for the highly sought-after hike. Their expedition, which required careful planning and teamwork, quickly transformed from a mere hike into an adventure filled with physical obstacles and mental challenges.

The initial idea for the expedition came from Tarkan, a friend of Durham and an experienced hiker, who had long dreamt of tackling Half Dome. With his extensive experience in wilderness exploration and his family’s annual trips to Yosemite, Tarkan was committed to securing permits. Upon learning that a group application would increase their chances, Durham jumped on board, keen on embracing the thrill.

In the lead-up to the hike, the group prepared diligently, even tackling a nine-mile trail the day before to acclimatise themselves to the terrain. Each backpack was filled with three litres of water, snacks, gloves, headlamps, and walkie-talkies, among other essentials. To maintain an early start, they headed to bed at 5 p.m. the day before, with plans to be up by 10:30 p.m. to commence their ascent at midnight.
The group set off from the base just as the clock struck midnight, embarking on what would become a six to twelve-hour journey, depending on their pace. They navigated the John Muir Trail with relative ease for the first section, sharing music and light-hearted banter through their walkie-talkies to keep spirits high.
However, the hike took a notable turn as they approached the sub-dome, where the terrain became decidedly more formidable. Team members Tarkan and Hadley advanced ahead, while Durham and her other friend, Kai, took special care navigating the slippery granite in darkness.
Durham vividly recalls the scene upon reaching the cables that lead to the summit. “Looking at the cables felt like the start of a horror movie,” she said, though the view of the valley at sunrise transformed the fear into awe. At this point, a fellow hiker named Gaeten joined them, exhibiting a level of confidence that emboldened Durham and Kai to continue.
After conquering the daunting cables and reaching the summit, the group spent roughly two hours at the top, capturing photos and soaking in the panoramic views of the natural beauty surrounding them. However, the descent brought its own challenges. Kai faced difficulties with his shoes, which began falling apart while descending the cables. A fellow hiker offered tape to assist in temporarily fixing the shoes, enabling the group to continue their journey safely.
Reflecting on the return trip, Durham noted that descending the sub-dome felt more intimidating than the ascent, especially as they encountered the busy Mist Trail on their way back. Despite a sense of discomfort amidst the crowd, she felt a profound sense of accomplishment upon completing the trek. “I would do it again in a heartbeat,” she remarked.
Yet, for Durham, the most daunting challenges lay not solely in the physical aspects of the hike, but in the mental hurdles she faced in the days leading up to it. She confided that nightmares plagued her before the climb and she felt nausea build during the drive to Yosemite. Her fears, particularly the fear of heights, made the experience all the more significant.
In sharing her adventure online, Durham turned to TikTok to document her journey, seeking insights from fellow hikers. Her initial video request prompted an overwhelming response, attracting over 40,000 likes and 1,000 comments filled with encouragement and advice. After completing the hike, she shared a follow-up video that quickly gained traction, resonating with many who found inspiration in her story, despite some negative comments.
As for future adventures, Durham looks forward to smaller trails in Lake Tahoe and dreams of conquering more challenging hikes like Angels Landing in Utah. Encouraging others to embark on their hiking journeys, she shares vital advice: “Do your research, go with friends, and be prepared.” She emphasises the importance of understanding both the risks and one’s own physical and mental capabilities before setting out on such adventures.
Durham’s tale serves as an inspiring reminder that the journey can be as rewarding as the destination, highlighting the power of preparation, camaraderie, and the courage to face one’s fears.
