The memoir delves into her complex relationship with her parents, the late Maureen Kelly, and guitarist Rick Dufay, offering readers a glimpse into a world rife with instability and adversity.

Minka Kelly, born on June 24, 1980, was raised primarily by her mother, Maureen, who worked as an exotic dancer at the Crazy Girls strip club in Los Angeles. Maureen faced numerous challenges, including addiction and domestic violence, all while striving to provide for her daughter. Minka has spoken candidly about how these circumstances shaped her early life, stating, “My childhood was colourful and chaotic, unstable and inconsistent, unpredictable and hard a lot of the times.” Despite these hardships, Minka credits her upbringing with fostering her adaptability and resilience.

The actress’s relationship with her father has also been a topic of discussion. Rick Dufay, a former guitarist for the rock band Aerosmith, was not a significant presence in Minka’s life until she was older. The couple’s initial encounter occurred in 1979 at a recording studio in Los Angeles, resulting in a brief romance that led to Maureen’s pregnancy. However, Dufay was embarking on a tour with Aerosmith and was not prepared for the responsibilities of fatherhood, which led to their separation.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Minka and her mother faced severe financial difficulties, even spending time living in a makeshift shelter within a storage unit at an apartment complex. On one notable occasion, Maureen faced a brief incarceration after being caught transporting drugs, something Minka learned about long after it happened. Subsequently, they relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Minka spent her middle and high school years.

Corresponding through letters became a vital means of communication for Minka and her mother during times they were apart. This seemed to have fostered a more profound emotional expression for Minka, who noted, “I got really comfortable with writing down my feelings.”

Later in life, Minka took the courageous step of moving to Los Angeles in an attempt to forge a relationship with her estranged father. Despite initial feelings of anger toward Dufay for his absence during her upbringing, she gradually came to a place of forgiveness. They began to bond more closely, navigating their complicated dynamics and leaning on each other for support.

Sadly, just as Minka and Maureen were beginning to mend their relationship, disaster struck. Maureen was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008, with a prognosis that left Minka grappling with her feelings of resentment and disappointment toward her mother. A therapist guided her to confront these emotions, allowing Minka to express forgiveness and love rather than anger. “I don’t need to do this to her,” Minka realised, as she sought to comfort her mother in her final days.

Maureen passed away in 2008 at the age of 51, leaving behind a legacy that Minka has strived to understand and reconcile throughout her life. Minka reflects on her mother’s impact with compassion, regarding her as “the most beautiful, free-spirited, big-hearted” individual she has known.

Today, Minka maintains a close, yet still evolving relationship with her father. She acknowledges they are both working through unresolved issues, affirming that they are now “good friends” and expressing gratitude for Dufay’s support in her life, especially as she navigates the complex terrain of the entertainment industry.
