The incident at Rockefeller Plaza occurred on 16th July when an intruder managed to breach the studio’s security. According to reports, this individual confronted Melvin and was reported to have made racist comments, expressing a desire to see fellow host Al Roker. Following this alarming event, the intruder was swiftly apprehended.
The man, identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, has a prior criminal record and is facing significant legal repercussions, including charges of third-degree burglary and menacing, both classified as hate crimes. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Truelove has been arraigned, and a temporary protection order was put in place to safeguard Melvin and Roker. If found guilty on all counts, he could serve up to 15 years in prison, with his next court appearance scheduled for 22nd July.
In the wake of the incident, Melvin made an appearance on the show the following day, where he addressed the unsettling situation. “You may have heard that unfortunately, an intruder made his way into an unauthorised area here at Studio 1A,” Melvin stated. He assured viewers that the intruder had been quickly detained and that they were cooperating fully with law enforcement as investigations progressed. Laura Jarrett, sitting in for Guthrie at that time, reiterated the importance of safety, to which Melvin added they were all “safe and sound.”
Despite the turmoil, Melvin’s absence from the show the week of 20th July was previously planned and not related to the recent incident. Meanwhile, Guthrie was returning to her role after taking a break, and she is anticipated to take additional time off soon. On 16th July, she announced she would be filming her new game show, “Wordle,” which is set to be executive-produced by Jimmy Fallon. She expressed excitement about the project, mentioning that it is planned to air in the new year.

However, Melvin took to Instagram shortly after the break-in to reassure followers that he was unharmed and grateful for the outpouring of support.
