Emergency services were alerted around 2 a.m. local time after police officers in the vicinity heard gunfire. Upon arrival at the establishment, situated at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Congress Street, authorities found all victims suffering from gunshot wounds, primarily to their extremities. Notably, at least one person sustained multiple gunshot injuries.
All nine victims were promptly transported to local hospitals, where they were reported to be in critical condition. In the midst of this chaotic scene, police encountered the suspect attempting to flee. The individual, who has not yet been identified, was shot by responding officers and subsequently received immediate first aid before being taken to a hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Though the specifics of the shooting are still under investigation, officials currently suspect that it stemmed from an earlier altercation between the involved parties. In light of this, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT) is overseeing inquiries into the shooting of the suspect, given the involvement of law enforcement officers.
The criminal investigation will be spearheaded by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Coincidingly, the Tucson Police Department is to conduct a separate internal review concerning the officer-involved shooting.
Tucson’s Mayor, Regina Romero, expressed her deep concern over the incident, labelling it a “serious and senseless act of gun violence.” In a statement shared via social media, she acknowledged the swift response from emergency services, highlighting the efforts of firefighters and police officers in stabilising the victims and ensuring their transportation to medical facilities. She underscored the pervasive impact of such violence, which resonates beyond the immediate scene, affecting families, witnesses, and the broader community.
Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, a prominent advocate for gun safety and violence prevention, also addressed the incident, reflecting on the emotional toll of such events. Giffords, who survived her own near-fatal shooting in 2011, expressed her condolences to the victims and their loved ones, emphasising her hope for their swift recoveries. She lamented the alarming recurrence of mass shootings in her hometown, advocating for reform to ensure that citizens can enjoy a night out without the looming threat of gun violence.
Giffords urged immediate action regarding laws that currently facilitate easy access to firearms for individuals deemed dangerous. Her statement resonated with many in the community, impacting the ongoing discourse on gun control in the state.
Investigators are appealing to the public for any information related to the shooting. They are particularly keen to hear from witnesses or anyone with video evidence, urging individuals to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and reference case number 260719048.
As the investigation progresses, the community continues to grapple with the repercussions of this shocking event, fostering discussions on safety and preventive measures against gun violence. The road to healing will likely be long for those directly impacted, as well as for the broader Tucson community, reflecting on the incident’s far-reaching implications.
