In May 2025, Dr. Chania Whitaker embarked on an adventurous new chapter, moving from Texas to Amsterdam in pursuit of personal development and a more balanced lifestyle. The 30-year-old chiropractor, who had dedicated her career to promoting healthier lives, realised that she herself was in need of growth and change.

“I didn’t move to escape my life in Texas,” Dr. Whitaker explained in a recent interview with PEOPLE. “I moved to see who I could become in a different environment.” With that goal in mind, she took the bold step of relocating to a new country without ever having visited it before, a decision she attributes to extensive research on Dutch culture and lifestyle.
Transitioning to life in the Netherlands has presented Dr. Whitaker with a myriad of challenges, primarily due to cultural differences. One of the more comical adjustments she faced was grocery shopping. “Shopping where everything is in another language and the stores are so much smaller took some getting used to,” she shared. The change from Texas supermarkets to local shops, such as Albert Heijn, was stark, particularly regarding brand variety and selection.
Public transportation was another hurdle. Dr. Whitaker candidly recalled her many misadventures while navigating the city’s extensive transport network. “I have gotten on the wrong train, bus, tram, metro, and ferry before getting it right,” she admitted, highlighting the adjustment of swapping the convenience of a car for an e-bike. Yet she feels that these changes have been worthwhile, as they contribute to her overarching goal of personal growth.
The language barrier was another prominent aspect of her cultural adaptation. Although she began learning Dutch shortly after her arrival, Dr. Whitaker is still striving for fluency. “Learning a new language is so humbling,” she remarked. She expressed eagerness for the day she can converse in Dutch as comfortably as she does in English.
Fortunately, after residing in Amsterdam for over a year, she now feels more settled in her new life. “I finally don’t panic when speaking Dutch; I can navigate public transport with ease, and I have a good group of friends that I can call on,” she said. Dr. Whitaker defined her sense of home as a combination of peace and community, believing that true belonging is reflected in how one navigates their life.
Despite the changes in her surroundings, there are aspects of her Texan heritage that she misses, particularly the culinary landscape. “In Texas, you can easily find something delicious,” she noted, while expressing appreciation for local eateries in Amsterdam. Yet, the absence of the more vibrant cultural elements of Texas, like the two-stepping scene, is notable to her.
One advantage to her relocation is the absence of traffic jams, a notorious feature of life in Texas. “I can proudly say I have not had to sit in traffic in the Netherlands,” she quipped, appreciating the bike-friendly infrastructure of her new city.
Reflecting on her experiences, Dr. Whitaker explained that the lifestyle in the Netherlands aligns more closely with her values than her previous life in Texas. The Dutch philosophy encourages a focus on leisure, with ample time allocated for hobbies, park visits, and socialising. “People make time for leisure and friendships here, which has allowed me to build meaningful relationships quite easily,” she asserted.
In sharing her journey on social media platforms like TikTok, Dr. Whitaker hopes to give others insight into the challenges and joys of relocating abroad. As she reminds herself, moving has illuminated the beauty of shared experiences. “I used to carry my biggest challenges alone,” she confessed. A newfound understanding of community support has reshaped her approach to both asking for help and offering it.
“My experience has reinforced how kind people can be when you let them in,” she added. Dr. Whitaker acknowledged that her friends in Amsterdam have been instrumental in her transition, helping her with everything from moving to navigating the city. This shift in mindset has proven to be a powerful lesson for her.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Whitaker concludes that while she didn’t reinvent herself, she has indeed become closer to the person she has always wanted to be. “Moving abroad is much harder than I could have imagined,” she admitted, but in doing so, she gifts herself an invaluable experience of growth and connection. Only time will tell how her ongoing adventure in Amsterdam will continue to shape her personal and professional life.
