A nostalgic discovery on Google Maps has provided a bittersweet reminder for Becky Turner of her cherished relationship with her late golden retriever, Sonny. The image, which captured Sonny joyfully running through the yard of Turner’s childhood home in Connecticut in 2014, reignited fond memories of a companion that contributed greatly to her upbringing.

Turner, now 29, stumbled upon the archival photograph while taking part in a popular TikTok trend, urging users to search for nostalgic memories tied to their childhood homes on Google Maps. With her parents and younger sister still living in the family home in Orange, Connecticut, Turner decided to revisit her past. In her quest, she initially aimed to find a picture of her sister riding her bike in the driveway, but what she found instead was a candid moment featuring Sonny that she had never seen before.

“I was absolutely stunned,” she recounted in an interview with PEOPLE. “Seeing that photo of him, it felt like he was alive for a moment. It was as though the love I felt for him found a way to remind me he’s still around. It was incredibly special.” The impact of this revelation struck her deeply, overflowing with emotion and nostalgia as she recalled not just her beloved pet, but the warmth and comfort he provided during her formative years.
The photograph served as a poignant reminder of the bond they shared. Sonny, who passed away in 2018 after a battle with cancer, had been an integral part of Turner’s life, accompanying her and her sisters through countless childhood adventures. The family had focused on keeping him comfortable during his final days, which left a tremendous void after his passing.
Turner shared that memories of Sonny are ever-present in her heart, intertwining with the fabric of her family’s life. “Sonny was there for every major milestone, and his gentle presence was comforting through all my adolescent struggles,” she said, illuminating the deep emotional connection she had with her canine companion.
Her recollections were often punctuated with fond laughter, as she remembers Sonny’s mischievous personality — stealing sandwiches during picnics and snatching blankets from prams. It is these little moments of joy and mischief that keep his spirit alive in her heart. “He had a knack for troubling us but was so charming that he could get away with anything,” Turner recalled fondly.
In addition to being a lively presence, Sonny also provided emotional support during the more challenging times. “In his later years, he became incredibly intuitive. He would wait up for me to return from my late shifts and would simply lie beside me while I shared my day’s struggles,” Turner explained.
The bond remained strong even in his final moments, as she lay beside him on the couch during his last night. “I could feel he was ready to go, and that it would be alright. It was a strange farewell, but it brought closure,” she said. The essence of Sonny, for Turner, continues to live on through the memories they created together.
Now a tattoo artist, Turner has embraced her creative talents to honour the memory of animals and the emotional connections they forge with humans. She frequently tattoos portraits of pets and other significant symbols, providing solace to those grieving the loss of their furry companions. “I find joy in helping to memorialise their bonds,” she said.
Sonny’s legacy endures not only through her tattoo work but also in the heart of her family, as they continue to live in their childhood home along with a new golden retriever, Brody, who is related to the late Sonny. “Every corner of that home is filled with memories of Sonny, and it’s heartwarming to keep his spirit alive,” she noted.
Reflecting on her experiences with Sonny, Turner emphasised the lessons he imparted, reinforcing her belief that dogs play a pivotal role in our lives, even if only for a brief period. “They enrich our lives profoundly, and it is up to us to make the most of the time we have with them,” she concluded, a testament to the enduring love she holds for her beloved pet. Through her art and memories, Sonny’s spirit will continue to be a guiding force in her life.
