Actor Jon Bernthal recently shared insights into his friendship with fellow star Tom Holland during an appearance on the morning show “Today” on July 15. The actors have reunited for two films this summer: “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” and Bernthal had much praise for his long-time friend and co-star.

Addressing his experiences on set, Bernthal expressed his admiration for Holland, stating, “I’m just so in awe of him and proud of him.” The 49-year-old actor noted that, despite Holland’s growing fame, he remains grounded, describing him as a “family-first guy” who is “in love.”
The discussion about their friendship comes in the wake of Holland confirming his marriage to fellow star Zendaya in June. Their relationship had sparked widespread speculation, especially after Zendaya was spotted wearing a diamond ring at the 2025 Golden Globes. Bernthal, reflecting on their reunion, described the opportunity to work closely with Holland once more as “a real treat.”

Holland and Bernthal have known each other since Holland was just 17 years old. This long-standing friendship has continued to flourish over the years, with Bernthal remembering auditioning for roles together, including parts for “The Punisher” and “Spider-Man” while they were in Ireland.
Their collaboration dates back to their performances in the 2017 historical action film “Pilgrimage.” This summer, Bernthal reprises his iconic role as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” while Holland will once again portray the beloved character of Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man. Zendaya will also return as Mary Jane Watson in what promises to be an exciting continuation of the franchise.
In addition to his role in the Spider-Man film, Bernthal takes on the character of Menelaus in “The Odyssey,” alongside Holland’s Telemachus and Zendaya’s Athena. Both films, which showcase their versatile talents, are now available in cinemas.
During the “Today” interview, Bernthal mentioned the physical transformations he underwent for his role in “The Odyssey,” which included shaving his head and growing a beard. However, he light-heartedly revealed that his wife, Erin Angle, was not particularly fond of his new look. Reflecting on this, he joked, “That was a big beard too. No bueno in my home,” demonstrating his knack for humour even while discussing serious topics.
As their careers continue to thrive, both Bernthal and Holland have captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Their camaraderie and mutual respect not only strengthen their performances on screen but also serve as a testament to their enduring friendship.
The release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 31 promises to delight fans, while “The Odyssey” continues to explore ancient tales with a contemporary twist. As these talented actors move forward in their careers, it is clear that their bond will remain a significant part of their journeys.
