Jackie Tohn, an actress best known for her role in the series “GLOW,” recently opened up about her deep-rooted friendship with fellow actress Jessica Biel during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast, “Armchair Expert.” Tohn’s revelations provided a glimpse into the unique bond they forged as teenagers, highlighting Biel’s significant influence on Tohn’s early career choices.

The pair first crossed paths at the TV Guide Awards in the late 1990s. At that time, Biel, who was 17 years old, was gaining recognition for her role in the popular television show “7th Heaven.” Tohn, who was 18, attended the awards as a guest of actor Benjamin Salisbury. Their connection was immediate, sparked by a fondness established during Tohn’s guest appearance on “The Nanny.”
During her conversation with Shepard, Tohn recounted how their friendship developed quickly after their first meeting. “We exchanged phone numbers pretty much right away,” Tohn said. Shortly after, Tohn faced the difficult decision of returning home to the East Coast for her studies, but it was Biel who encouraged her to pursue her passion for acting more seriously. Tohn stated, “She convinced me to drop out of college,” adding that it wasn’t a struggle to persuade her at all.
Tohn’s leap into the acting world included moving to Los Angeles, where she found herself in a tough spot with nowhere to stay. Once again, Biel stepped up and offered her home as a refuge. Tohn recalled her youthful trepidation, expressing, “I can’t live here. I have nowhere to live.” Biel responded supportively, suggesting, “Live with my family.” Tohn took the plunge and left her college life behind, exclaiming, “See ya, University of Delaware.”
The time Tohn spent living with Biel and her family was brief but impactful. Lasting less than six months, this period was filled with significant life lessons, as Tohn not only pursued acting but also absorbed practical skills from Biel’s mother, Kim. “She taught me how to write a check and how to pump gas,” Tohn shared, reflecting on how she had little experience living independently at such a young age.
Recalling the playful antics during her stay, Tohn described her time with Biel as a blend of youthful exploration and creativity. “We were putting on wigs and dressing crazy for friends’ parties at UCLA,” Tohn said, hinting at a carefree spirit in the midst of their young lives in Los Angeles. Those moments remain vivid in Tohn’s memory, representing a key chapter in her journey.
Tohn’s friendship with Biel isn’t her only notable connection in the industry. She recently recounted another instance of support from Kristen Bell, who came to her aid after a late-night argument with a boyfriend. Tohn shared, “I texted her and she was like, ‘The front door’s open.’” This illustrated the ease and comfort of reaching out to friends in times of need.
Fast forward to today, Tohn resides in Glendale, California, with actor and writer-director Joe Gillette. They moved in together in 2023, and Tohn expressed her contentment with their contemporary-style house, which offers both privacy and ample natural light. “It’s quiet and 20 minutes from everywhere I need to be,” she enthused, highlighting a new chapter in her life that is both stabilising and fulfilling.
Through her candid reminiscences, Jackie Tohn celebrates the strong friendships that have shaped her journey in Hollywood. The support from her peers, particularly Biel, underscores the importance of community among actors and serves as a reminder of the bonds formed in the early stages of their careers. Such connections not only provide guidance and encouragement but also enrich their personal lives in an unpredictable industry.
