On Thursday morning, a shocking incident unfolded at the Today show studio located in Rockefeller Plaza, New York City, when an intruder broke into the premises and confronted co-host Craig Melvin. The alarming event, which occurred around 9 a.m., resulted in the man being detained by the police shortly after.

Melvin, who was on air during the morning broadcast, managed to alert security during the confrontation, which involved the intruder hurling racial slurs at him. Reports indicate that the perpetrator, later identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, specifically requested the presence of fellow co-host Al Roker after managing to bypass studio security measures.
Truelove has since been charged with multiple offences, including burglary as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime, criminal trespass as a hate crime, and harassment, according to a statement from the New York Police Department. As of now, he has not yet been arraigned. Public records highlight Truelove’s criminal background, revealing prior convictions for felony criminal mischief dating back to June 2026. He had previously received a six-month jail sentence, along with five years of probation, but it remains unclear how much of that sentence he completed before the recent incident.
The intruder also has three active criminal cases pending in New York, where he has entered not guilty pleas for charges such as misdemeanour assault, reckless endangerment, and various trespassing offences.
In the aftermath of the confrontation, Melvin took to Instagram to reassure his followers. “Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours,” he posted. “I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow.” This message comes ahead of a planned vacation that he was scheduled to begin on Monday, July 20.
NBC News released a statement confirming the breach and detailing the sequence of events. The network stated that the individual had approached Melvin, who promptly contacted security, leading to the intruder being taken into custody without further escalation or injury. The statement emphasised that the network is taking the security of its personnel and guests seriously, adding, “Today is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter.”
Following the incident, Melvin and his co-host Laura Jarrett resumed the morning broadcast, although Savannah Guthrie was absent, having announced her temporary leave to work on a new project related to the popular word game, Wordle.
The police confirmed that they responded to the situation at approximately 9:19 a.m., after receiving reports of a disorderly individual within the confines of 30 Rockefeller Center. Fortunately, authorities reported no injuries stemming from the incident. However, the NYPD has stated that the investigation is still ongoing, and further inquiries are likely as they assess the circumstances surrounding the breach.
In light of this occurrence, Today show producers are reviewing security protocols, ensuring that measures are in place to prevent any future incidents. The safety of all employees, guests, and viewers remains a top priority for the programme.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding security at prominent broadcasting venues, particularly in a bustling metropolis like New York City. With public interest shows like Today drawing large audiences both in-person and through broadcast, the need for stringent security measures remains paramount to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
