Authorities from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department were called to a residence on Victoria Street in Highland just before 5:30 p.m. that Thursday, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered the child had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts to perform CPR at the scene, the boy was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the toddler had accessed a firearm concealed between the cushions of a couch in the home. According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, the little boy managed to shoot himself while unsupervised.

Both individuals are being held at the Central Detention Center with bail set at a staggering $1,350,000.
