In a heartfelt ceremony at the 2026 ESPYs, Jarron Collins accepted the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award for Courage on behalf of his late brother, Jason Collins, who passed away in May at the age of 47 following a battle with glioblastoma. Jason, who made history as the first openly gay player in the NBA, was recognised for his groundbreaking contributions to the sport and for being a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ+ community.

Held on July 15 in New York City’s David H. Koch Theater, the event was an emotional tribute to Jason’s legacy. Jarron Collins, also an accomplished basketball player and coach, has vowed to continue sharing his brother’s story, describing Jason as a trailblazer and an inspiration to countless individuals.

“I miss my brother,” Jarron began his poignant speech, as he stood before an audience filled with family, friends, and fellow athletes. “I wish he were here standing to accept this award. But I find myself honoured to be here to accept this award on his behalf.” His words resonated with the audience, evoking a sense of both loss and celebration of Jason’s remarkable life.
Throughout his speech, Jarron highlighted the importance of connection and community in Jason’s life. He expressed gratitude to Jason’s husband, film producer Brunson Green, who joined the audience, visibly moved by the tribute. Jarron also thanked Jason’s teammates, coaches, and friends from the NBA for their unwavering support during the trials Jason faced, including his courageous battle with cancer.
Jason Collins had a profound admiration for tennis legend Arthur Ashe, the award’s namesake, whom Jarron described as “a pioneer in this world.” Jarron recalled how deeply Jason valued authenticity and grace throughout his life. “These past few months I told my brother repeatedly, he was the bravest and strongest man I’ve ever known,” Jarron reflected. “His courage and grace made him a trailblazer, and his impact on the world will not be forgotten.”
In a heartfelt exchange with the audience, Jarron shared how many people approached him to express how Jason’s coming out in a 2013 Sports Illustrated essay had positively impacted their lives. “It’s truly humbling when strangers tell me how much my brother’s decision has influenced them,” he said, highlighting Jason’s role in making the NBA a more inclusive space for future generations.
Jason’s diagnosis with glioblastoma was a pivotal moment in his life. Jarron revealed that his brother chose to share his journey through treatment to raise awareness and provide hope for others facing similar challenges. “I pledge to ensure that tonight is not the end of my brother’s legacy,” he affirmed passionately. “It’s just the beginning. There are so many more people who could benefit from hearing his story, and it’s our responsibility to keep telling it.”
As he concluded, Jarron reminisced about the special bond he shared with his brother, recalling how they were often confused for one another while growing up. “Now, that scenario has a whole different significance for me,” he reflected. “I’ve never been more proud of Jason than in this moment. What a true accomplishment. Thank you for recognising my brother and for celebrating his life.”
Jason Collins, a native of Northridge, California, embarked on his NBA journey in 2001 when he was drafted by the Houston Rockets. He made his first appearance in the league with the New Jersey Nets, playing in the NBA Finals later that season. His career spanned several teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, and Washington Wizards.
Jarron, who also has an impressive basketball legacy, played for the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, and Portland Trail Blazers. Following his retirement from professional play, he transitioned into coaching, most recently serving as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans until recently.
As the sports world continues to honour Jason Collins and the indelible mark he left on the game, his story serves as a reminder of the power of courage, authenticity, and the importance of representation. Jarron’s promise to uphold his brother’s memory will undoubtedly keep Jason’s inspiring legacy alive for generations to come.
