The U.S. State Department has elevated its travel advisory for St. Lucia to Level 2, advising Americans to “exercise increased caution” while visiting the Caribbean island nation. This change, implemented on July 10, reflects growing concerns about crime in popular tourist areas, prompting warnings regarding petty theft and more serious violent offences.
According to the State Department, petty crime is prevalent in St. Lucia, particularly in locations frequented by tourists. Incidents such as pickpocketing and purse snatching are highlighted as common “crimes of opportunity”. Additionally, the advisory notes that visitors should remain vigilant against scams and overcharging by aggressive vendors.

Reports indicate that more severe crimes have also been reported in St. Lucia, casting a shadow over its appeal as a holiday destination. The advisory states that U.S. citizens and other foreigners have been victims of armed robbery, assaults, burglaries, and even sexual violence. Alarmingly, there have been instances where American citizens have lost their lives in violent encounters on the island.
Officials urge travellers to remain aware of their surroundings while exploring St. Lucia. Cautions include avoiding walks or drives during the night, maintaining a low profile, and refraining from displaying signs of wealth, such as expensive jewellery or watches. Visitors are also advised to verify the identity of anyone at their hotel or residence before opening doors.
When accessing banks or ATMs, caution is equally essential, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. The U.S. State Department indicates that tourist police are available to assist in uncomfortable situations should they arise.

In light of these warnings, the Department encourages potential visitors to familiarise themselves with available safety resources and consider acquiring travel insurance prior to embarking on their journey to St. Lucia.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has echoed the U.S. advisory, reporting that St. Lucia has seen incidents of crime including murder and sexual assault. The office further notes the ongoing threat of gang-related violence involving firearms, adding to the apprehension regarding safety on the island.
Despite these concerns, tourism in St. Lucia appears to be on the rise. A recent press release from the St. Lucia Tourism Authority noted that the country recorded over 40,000 international overnight visitors in April 2026, which marks an increase in tourist arrivals from the previous year, particularly from the United States.
The advisory level for St. Lucia, set at Level 2, is consistent with warnings for various other well-travelled destinations, including France, Italy, Costa Rica, and the Bahamas. Such classifications serve to inform potential tourists about the varying degrees of risk associated with travel to specific regions.
As St. Lucia remains a cherished holiday destination, the increased advisory underscores the importance of vigilance and precaution for visitors. Those planning to travel are urged to stay informed about the current situation and to take necessary steps to protect their safety during their stay.
