A new docuseries on Netflix, titled *The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare*, delves into the harrowing case of four University of Idaho students who were fatally stabbed in their off-campus home in November 2022. The release of the three-part series aims to highlight the lives of the victims, whilst also illuminating the chilling circumstances surrounding their tragic deaths.
Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, also 21, Xana Kernodle, aged 20, and 20-year-old Ethan Chapin were killed during the early hours of November 13, 2022. The gruesome incident took place in their shared residence in Moscow, Idaho, leaving two surviving roommates who were also in the house at the time of the attack. As the investigation unfolded, the case drew national attention, raising questions about the safety of students and the nature of the crime.

Bryan Kohberger, a former criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, was arrested over a month later, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation. In July 2025, Kohberger pleaded guilty to the murders and was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment without the chance of parole. Despite confessing to the heinous act, he remained largely emotionless in court, providing little insight into his motives for targeting the students.
The docuseries, which premieres on July 29, 2025, seeks to provide a comprehensive account of the case while honouring the memories of the victims. Executive producer Joe Berlinger has indicated that viewers can expect unprecedented access to family members of the victims, along with previously unseen police body cam footage and detailed police interviews. This fresh perspective aims to shed light on both the investigation and the lives of the four young individuals who lost theirs far too soon.
Kohberger’s actions on the night of the murders were particularly shocking. Prosecutors revealed that he entered the residence shortly after 4 a.m. and proceeded to the second and third floors, where the victims were asleep. Notably, Goncalves had just returned that weekend after having moved out, intending to visit her close friend Mogen. It is believed that she attempted to defend herself during the attack but was ultimately overpowered by Kohberger.
The attack escalated when Kohberger encountered Kernodle and her partner Chapin as he tried to flee the scene. In a horrific turn of events, he fatally stabbed both of them, resulting in a total of at least 150 stab wounds across all four victims. An autopsy later confirmed that Kernodle had sustained the most injuries, indicating she fought bravely for her life against her attacker.
In the aftermath of the brutal stabbings, Kohberger managed to escape, but investigators soon identified him as a suspect. Remarkably, DNA left on a knife sheath allowed authorities to connect him to the crime. Additionally, the police traced his mobile phone activity and obtained surveillance footage that captured a vehicle resembling Kohberger’s car in the vicinity of the crime scene.
Director Skye Borgman has expressed her commitment to portraying the victims in a respectful and meaningful manner. She emphasised the importance of remembering who Mogen, Goncalves, Kernodle, and Chapin were beyond the circumstances of their deaths. “Four young people lost their lives, and they deserved to be remembered for far more than the tragedy that took them,” she stated.
Borgman described the project as deeply personal, feeling a distinct responsibility to ensure the victims were at the forefront of the narrative. “At a time when so much attention has been focused on the case itself, I felt it was important to create something that brings the focus back to who they were, the lives they lived, and the love that still surrounds them,” she added.
The imminent release of *The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare* promises to bring a nuanced perspective to a case that has captivated and horrified many. By honouring the memories of the victims alongside exploring the details of the investigation, the series aims to provide a thorough understanding of not only the events that transpired but also the impact on the community and beyond.
As anticipation mounts for the series premiere, many are hopeful that it will offer a respectful tribute to four young lives tragically cut short, while also providing insights into the case that has garnered extensive media coverage in recent years.
