A mother from Florida has been charged with child abuse and neglect after allegedly chaining her 13-year-old daughter to a fence in extreme temperatures. The incident took place on Saturday morning, 11 July, outside the child’s great-grandmother’s home in Hialeah, a city within Miami-Dade County.

Yashira Marie Maldonado, 34, is under investigation after her daughter was discovered tied to a metal fence, reportedly without food, water, or any protection from the sweltering sun. According to reports from local media, Maldonado abandoned her daughter after driving her to the property from their apartment on West 28th Street.

The abusive details emerged from an arrest report citing that Maldonado used a metal chain to secure her daughter’s waist to the fence, immobilising her. Neighbours captured footage on their Ring doorbell camera that purportedly shows Maldonado arriving at the location shortly before 9 a.m. before leaving her child behind.
Witnesses revealed that the teenager was left with a backpack containing clothes and medication, but without any basic necessities, as temperatures soared over 93 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius) that day. Her great-grandmother reportedly attempted to free the girl but was unable to do so. In a state of distress, she ultimately decided to reach out to Maldonado’s mother instead of calling the police, fearing her landlord might evict her for calling authorities.
Hialeah Police Lieutenant Eddie Rodriguez stated that a family member not residing at the house made the call to the police after learning about the situation. Rodriguez commented on the distressing nature of the case, saying, “It’s horrible. She left her outside, no shade. Right in the sun. The heat alone, it’s very sad for what happened to this 13-year-old child.”
Maldonado, who has since been released on bond, has been ordered not to contact her daughter. Following her arrest, she reportedly admitted to officers that she recognised her actions were wrong but claimed she needed a break from the responsibilities of parenting.
At present, details concerning the well-being of the 13-year-old and who is overseeing her care following Maldonado’s detainment have not been disclosed. The Hialeah Police Department and the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department have yet to provide additional comments or updates on the case.
The severe nature of the allegations has raised significant concern within the community, prompting discussions about child welfare and the responsibilities of caregivers in times of stress. Local advocates for children’s rights have expressed alarm at the reported treatment of the young girl, calling for adequate support systems to be in place for struggling parents.
As more details of this troubling event come to light, the focus remains on child protection services and their role in preventing such incidents from occurring in the future. The case now serves as a critical reminder of the importance of vigilance and intervention in situations where vulnerable individuals may be at risk.
While community members await further developments, calls for robust support mechanisms for families in distress continue to echo through Hialeah and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for resources to assist both children and their guardians.
