In July 2012, the Scimone family experienced a harrowing ordeal while on what was meant to be a memorable holiday. John and Meghan Scimone, alongside their 14-month-old daughter Lilah, boarded the Costa Concordia cruise ship, marking their first significant vacation together as a family. As they cruised through the picturesque Mediterranean, their adventure took a terrifying turn.

On the night of 13 July, after putting Lilah to bed, John and Meghan were jolted awake by a violent shaking accompanied by unsettling noises. Unbeknownst to them at the time, the luxurious vessel had collided with an underwater rock near Giglio Island, causing catastrophic damage. The impact penetrated a 174-foot hole in the ship’s side, leading to severe flooding and electrical failures. Panic soon engulfed the 4,000 passengers and crew members aboard, as communication from the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, failed to convey the severity of the situation.

In the aftermath of the collision, chaos erupted on the ship. Despite the captain’s reassurances, the reality became evident that many lives were at risk. Tragically, the disaster claimed the lives of 32 individuals. John and Meghan Scimone quickly realised they had to act if they were to rescue their daughter and themselves.

The couple recounted their harrowing experience in the Netflix documentary “Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea,” which was released on 10 July. They vividly described waking Lilah from her slumber, their hearts racing with fear as they navigated through the dark and chaotic corridors of the ship in search of safety. The couple’s instinct to protect their daughter drove them into the thick of the pandemonium as they rushed for higher ground in hopes of finding a lifeboat.
After what felt like an eternity of climbing through the tumult, they eventually came upon a lifeboat. Unfortunately, the tilt of the ship meant that the lifeboat could not easily detach. In a moment of desperation, John found himself handing Lilah to a stranger, all while suspended precariously over the Mediterranean waters. Their fight for survival continued as they realised there were no more lifeboats available, leading them to consider jumping into the sea.
With courage and determination, the couple descended to the lowest level of the ship. As they propelled themselves down a hallway, furniture tumbled around them, and Lilah accidentally struck her head. John’s instinctive concern for her wellbeing was palpable, as he recalled the frightening experience of keeping her safe amidst the chaos.
Miraculously, at the last moment, an empty lifeboat returned to the ship, and the Scimones managed to board it just before it departed. Their relief was overwhelming, as they gazed up and realised the enormity of the situation, feeling the weight of the ship’s hull overshadowing them. Eventually, the family made it to safety on dry land, where they received medical evaluations.
Now, more than a decade later, Lilah Scimone has emerged as a thriving 15-year-old with a passion for dance. Her experiences during the Costa Concordia disaster did not define her childhood, as her parents were careful to monitor her physical and emotional health following the traumatic event. John Scimone has openly shared how the ordeal affected him psychologically; however, he and Meghan worked diligently to ensure Lilah’s post-incident development remained positive.
Today, Lilah is described as a “well-rounded and grounded” young woman, flourishing as a talented ballerina. Her father proudly mentions her dedication to dancing, suggesting that her passion could have a meaningful impact on the world. Despite the darker shadows of their past, the Scimone family has continued to thrive in their lives back in Austin, Texas.
Soon after the events at sea, the couple expanded their family, welcoming two more children, son Graham and daughter Violet. John and Meghan have steered clear of the public spotlight, choosing to raise their children with a sense of normalcy, away from the remnants of their traumatic experience.
As the Scimone family reflects on that fateful night, they express immense gratitude for their survival and subsequent life journeys. Their experience aboard the Costa Concordia is a poignant reminder of resilience and the importance of family, and while scars from that night linger, their focus remains on cherishing life and the opportunities ahead.
