The cast and crew of ‘The Five Star Weekend’ recently wrapped up a three-week on-location shoot in Massachusetts, prominently featuring the picturesque island of Nantucket. While the interior scenes were filmed on a soundstage in Los Angeles, the vibrant narratives of the series come alive against the backdrop of this historically rich location.

Leading the cast is Jennifer Garner, who plays Hollis, a food blogger grappling with grief. In an interview with PEOPLE, she expressed how filming in Nantucket deepened her appreciation for the island’s beautiful beaches, remarkable history, and attractions like the Whaling Museum. Garner described the idyllic setting, saying, “You can have any kind of experience you want to have on Nantucket… shopping, learning about history, and enjoying nature.”
The series follows Hollis as she plans a weekend getaway with friends to this small Massachusetts island, which serves as a significant backdrop in Elin Hilderbrand’s works. Hilderbrand herself has a strong affinity for Nantucket, having spent formative summers on Cape Cod before moving to the island in 1993. The author’s fondness for the area has undoubtedly influenced many aspects of the show.
Showrunner Bekah Brunstetter shared insights into the filming process, revealing that a majority of the series was produced in Los Angeles, with Nantucket providing the perfect location for pivotal scenes. “We had to be very judicious and deliberate about what we shot in Nantucket,” she explained, emphasising the show’s commitment to capturing the island’s unique spirit.
Filming in Nantucket posed its challenges, particularly due to concerns from the local Select Board about potential overtourism. However, after discussion, permissions were granted for filming, which has since prompted a review of the town’s filming policies. Brunstetter noted that the team faced additional restrictions due to weather conditions, which shaped their storytelling process during post-production.
Various iconic locations across Nantucket grace the screen in ‘The Five Star Weekend’. Brunstetter highlighted that scenes were filmed around Main Street, at Bartlett’s Farm, and outside Cru, a popular seafood spot. The series also incorporates local goods, such as Something Natural bread and Wicked Island morning buns, further cementing its connection to the island’s culture.
‘Sconset, an unincorporated village on Nantucket’s eastern tip with a quaint history, serves as the setting for Hollis’s vacation home. This picturesque area resonates with the show’s themes of community and escape, retaining the essence of the island’s charm, as noted by the Nantucket Historical Association.
Cast members have praised their time on the island. Garner spoke passionately about her experience, recalling her enjoyment of the local beaches, lighthouses, and culinary offerings. The Whaling Museum particularly captured her interest, marking her as a frequent visitor during the shoot.
Chloë Sevigny, who portrays Tatum in the series, echoed Garner’s sentiment, remarking on their time spent on the serene island. “We had this time together, kind of isolated on this island,” she recalled, noting the bond formed among the cast members. Their camaraderie was captured by the Nantucket Current, which shared moments of the cast participating in a lively karaoke night at a local venue. Garner, Sevigny, and their fellow actresses serenaded onlookers with ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” showcasing the joy they found in working together.
As ‘The Five Star Weekend’ approaches its release, it is clear that the beauty of Nantucket and the experiences shared among the cast will shine through, creating a heartfelt narrative that resonates with fans of the original novel and the series alike. With such authentic depictions, viewers can anticipate a portrayal of the island that highlights both its scenic splendour and the warmth of its community.
