Warren Buffett, the renowned investor and chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has made headlines with his latest charitable giving announcement, which notably omits the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the first time in twenty years. The 95-year-old philanthropist revealed on 14 July that he will allocate 12 million Class B shares of his company, a move set to benefit four specific foundations while leaving out the Gates Foundation, an organisation with which he has had a longstanding relationship.

Buffett’s announced donations will see 9 million shares directed to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, alongside 1 million shares each going to the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the Novo Foundation. In a statement, Buffett expressed his intention to part with all his Berkshire shares within the next eight years, although he acknowledged the unpredictability of life. “My remaining shares will be donated to the four foundations one way or the other by December 31, 2034,” he affirmed.
This decision appears to signal a significant shift in Buffett’s philanthropic focus, particularly given his history of substantial contributions to the Gates Foundation since 2006. Over these years, he has donated a staggering total exceeding $47 billion to bolster the Foundation’s global health and development efforts. However, the latest developments raise questions about his relationship with Bill Gates, who is facing scrutiny due to his past connections with the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Earlier this year, Buffett disclosed that he had not spoken with Gates since Epstein’s files were released. Concerns surrounding these files, which detail Epstein’s extensive network, have prompted Buffett to distance himself from Gates. Speaking in March, he indicated his reluctance to be involved in any further investigations, suggesting that he preferred not to be privy to information that could potentially result in a subpoena.
In response to Buffett’s donations, the Gates Foundation expressed gratitude for his ongoing support. “His gifts have helped us expand and deliver on the foundation’s mission to improve health and opportunity for people around the world,” a spokesperson for the foundation stated. This sentiment underscores the widespread impact of Buffett’s contributions over the years, which have significantly supported global health initiatives.
Bill Gates has recently faced intense scrutiny regarding his historical interactions with Epstein, particularly during testimony to the House Oversight Committee. Gates, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing, addressed queries about his association with the financier, recounting that his dealings began in 2011. He highlighted that these interactions were intended to secure support for his global health philanthropy, but ceased in late 2014 after he uncovered Epstein’s involvement in sensitive aspects of his personal life.
During his testimony, Gates remarked, “I never witnessed nor had any indication that Epstein was engaged in ongoing criminal conduct.” He asserted that he had avoided visits to Epstein’s properties and had not engaged directly with any of Epstein’s victims, although he acknowledged that he may have been in their presence at times.
Despite the turmoil surrounding their affiliations, Buffett had continued to provide funds to the Gates Foundation even after resigning from its board in 2021. His commitment to charity has remained steadfast, evident in his most recent philanthropic efforts, which included a notable $6 billion donation last year to various organisations, including the Gates Foundation.
In light of these developments, the Gates Foundation announced its plans to conduct an external review evaluating past engagements with Epstein and scrutinising current processes for vetting future philanthropic partnerships. This review, anticipated to yield updates later in the summer, reflects the foundation’s commitment to transparency and accountability amid emerging controversies.
As Warren Buffett shifts his philanthropic strategy away from the Gates Foundation, it marks a pivotal moment in two of the most prominent figures in philanthropy. This change, intertwined with the ongoing investigation into Epstein’s activities, demonstrates the complexities and challenges that can arise within high-profile charitable enterprises. The implications of these decisions will be closely monitored as both parties navigate their respective paths in philanthropy moving forward.
