United Airlines is set to enhance its passenger experience with an innovative seating arrangement on its upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The airline has unveiled plans for a unique Economy Plus row, which will reconfigure the middle seat into a communal table. This development, announced on 14 July 2023, aims to provide more comfort for window and aisle passengers during long-haul flights.

The redesigned seating will feature a fixed table that extends from one armrest to another across the vacant middle seat, allowing passengers seated on the sides to enjoy extra space. According to United’s press release, the addition aims to make travel more comfortable by giving passengers more elbow and legroom during their journeys.

Andrew Nocella, United Airlines’ Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the new seating option. He stated, “On each XLR, one row will have large, custom-designed tables stretching from armrest to armrest across the open middle seats, giving customers sitting in the window or aisle seat extra space to stretch out on longer international flights.” Additionally, the table will come equipped with two cup holders for convenience.
Passengers in the Economy Plus section will also benefit from three extra inches of legroom compared to standard economy seating. Nocella highlighted the airline’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its fleet, noting, “We’re investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin.” He also mentioned that the A321XLR not only includes these new Economy Plus offerings but also features lie-flat seats with all-aisle access in the United Polaris business class.
Later this year, United Airlines will commence sales for the coveted Economy Plus seats. The airline is also considering expanding this innovative seating design to its other aircraft in the future, although specific details have not yet been confirmed.
The Airbus A321XLR will be a premium offering with a configuration that includes 32 seats in the premium section and the Polaris suite, which engages passengers with all-aisle access. Each seat will be fitted with a large 4K OLED screen that includes Bluetooth connectivity, enabling passengers to enjoy an enhanced in-flight entertainment experience. Additional features such as larger overhead bins and a snack bar are also part of the aircraft’s amenities.
United anticipates beginning domestic flights with the A321XLR in the autumn of this year, with international routes slated to launch in 2027. This announcement follows the recent introduction of the airline’s Relax Row, a configuration of economy seats that transforms into a couch on long-haul flights. This new feature, set for rollout on Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, offers adjustable leg rests and added comforts such as mattress pads, blankets, and travel kits for families.
This latest innovation exemplifies United Airlines’ ongoing efforts to improve passenger comfort and convenience, particularly for longer flights. With the combination of extra legroom and shared table seating options, the airline appears well-positioned to enhance the in-flight experience for travellers who value additional comfort and space.
As United Airlines prepares to implement these changes, it remains committed to continuous improvement, ensuring that its passengers enjoy an enjoyable flying experience from start to finish. With anticipated upgrades rolling out in the coming years, travelers can look forward to new levels of convenience and comfort aboard the airline’s fleet.
