Mark Ballas, a well-known dancer and performer, has recently shared insights into his role as a judge on the new show “Dancing with the Stars: Next Pro,” where he is paired with his mother, Shirley Ballas. The duo brings a unique blend of experience and perspective to the judging panel, highlighting the influence their strong family ties have had on their approach to dance and mentorship.

In a conversation at the show’s premiere watch party on July 13, Ballas expressed his enthusiasm for working alongside his mother, a veteran in the dance industry. “It’s just another day in the office for me,” Mark stated, emphasising the significance of their relationship. Shirley, who is also the head judge on the UK’s “Strictly Come Dancing,” has played an instrumental role in Mark’s life and career, having trained him since his childhood.

Dancing with the Stars: Next Pro features a group of twelve dancers vying for a coveted professional dancer position in the upcoming season of the renowned competition. Mark and Shirley are joined each episode by different guest judges, including the likes of Derek Hough and Witney Carson, while Robert Irwin hosts the show.
Drawing on his vast experience as a professional dancer for nearly two decades, Mark noted that he brings a distinct perspective to the judging table. “I feel for the contestants. I understand,” he explained, contrasting his approach with that of his mother. Although Shirley has competed at a high level and is now a respected judge, Mark pointed out that his own recent experiences on the dance floor allow him to connect with the contestants on a deeper level.
He continued, “There are moments where I’m proud and I’m excited. There are also moments where I expect more.” Mark stressed that his role is to provide constructive feedback, which he acknowledges might not always be what contestants wish to hear. “I was raised and coached by my mom,” he said, pointing to the straightforwardness of his feedback style.
Mark Ballas, born in 1986 to Shirley and her then-husband Corky, grew up in a competitive dance environment, alongside fellow dancers such as Derek and Julianne Hough. He fondly remembered his family’s ongoing support throughout his career, including a recent celebratory FaceTime with his parents when he won “Dancing with the Stars” with partner Charli D’Amelio in November 2022.
With Shirley stepping into her role as the head judge on “Strictly Come Dancing” following Len Goodman’s departure in 2017, she has continued to shape the dance landscape in the UK. Mark highlighted the difference in their judging styles, stating, “My mum’s not going to tell you, ‘Well, I don’t like it.’ She will explain why,” underscoring her wealth of knowledge in Latin American ballroom dancing.
The show “Dancing with the Stars: Next Pro” aims to nurture new talent, and both Mark and Shirley are committed to providing contestants with valuable guidance. The series airs every Monday on ABC, and viewers can expect to see the mother-son duo offer their distinct insights into the world of dance, rooted in years of experience and family dynamics.
As both Mark and Shirley continue to make their mark in the dance world, their collaboration on “Dancing with the Stars: Next Pro” serves as a testament to the enduring bond between mother and son, exemplifying how shared passion can lead to new opportunities and mutual growth.
