On 13 July, the much-anticipated spinoff of the famed dance competition series, *Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro*, made its debut, capturing the attention of dance enthusiasts across the nation. The show features 12 talented dancers vying for an opportunity to join the professional roster in the upcoming 35th season of *Dancing with the Stars*. The premiere was not only a showcase of skill but also a reminder of the pressures involved in the highly competitive world of dance.

The inaugural episode saw reigning Mirrorball Champion Robert Irwin take on the role of host, guiding viewers through the thrilling challenges and performances. Special guest judge Derek Hough, a seasoned six-time Mirrorball champion, added his expertise alongside renowned judging duo Shirley and Mark Ballas, creating a star-studded panel for the contestants.
As the episode unfolded, Hough wasted no time in preparing the competitors for the rigorous demands of the contest. After a dramatic opening performance, he divided the dancers into pairs, tasking the men with executing a jive routine while the women were challenged to master the samba. Each pair understood that the stakes were high, as they faced a double elimination based solely on their technical ability.
Among the male pairs were Erik Linder, a celebrated Latin dancer, with hip-hop and ballroom dancer Tristen Sanders; AJ Pritchard teamed up with Latin dancer Jake Monreal; and youth Latin champion Allen Genkin partnered with Latin dancer Benji Castro. Meanwhile, the female contestants included commercial dancer Selena Hamilton with champion ballroom dancer Natalie Jolley, commercial dancer Briar Nolet paired with ballroom dancer Stephani Sosa, and Latin dancers Nina Mayster and Adele Zaikman forming the last duo.
During rehearsals, Hough made his rounds to offer tailored feedback. For Briar Nolet and Stephani Sosa, he recommended a focus on maintaining a strong sense of presence and specific movement. “I’d rather see the action,” he advised Briar, emphasising that too much travelling could detract from the overall performance.
However, the pressure proved too much for Briar during her samba routine. Just moments into her solo segment, nerves got the better of her, resulting in a slip that drew gasps from both judges and fellow competitors. Yet, demonstrating commendable resilience, she swiftly regained her footing and completed the routine. Observing from backstage, other contestants expressed their empathy and respect, with comments highlighting how admirable it was that she pressed on despite the stumble.
Mark Ballas, one of the judges, offered reassurance following her performance, commenting, “I know you slipped… it’s not about falling; it’s about getting up and carrying on.” His affirmation aimed to console her and redirect the focus to the positives of her performance. Shirley Ballas added to the positive reinforcement, praising Briar’s innate sensuality while suggesting areas for improvement in her posture.
Despite the support, the judges’ verdicts reflected the stakes of the competition. Briar’s slip raised concerns for Derek, considering the focus on technique, but ultimately he acknowledged that the pair performed well. In the end, the night concluded with a shock as Briar and her partner Jake faced elimination, joining her in the bottom four alongside Natalie and Tristen.
In her departure, Briar expressed pride in her journey, acknowledging the valuable lessons learned from the experience. “It sucks to hear your name, but I’m so proud. I have lessons from some of the greatest in the industry through the comments, good and bad, and I’ll take them in and figure out what’s next,” she stated with determination.
As the competition progresses, viewers can expect a display of both skill and emotional resilience from the remaining contestants. Each episode promises to bring high-pressure performances that blend artistry with intense competition. *Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro* airs every Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, providing audiences with a weekly dose of inspiring dance and drama. As the aspiring pros strive for their moment in the spotlight, fans will undoubtedly be eager to see who rises to the occasion.
