The incident occurred late on the night of Saturday, July 11, when emergency services received alarming reports of individuals calling for help just before 10:45 p.m. near a YMCA camp situated on Deer Island. Fortunately, no campers or camp staff were involved in the mishap.

Authorities from the Pepin County and Wabasha County Sheriff’s Offices reported that rescue crews arrived at the scene and located three people clinging to the overturned 27-foot boat, while three others were missing. Search operations commenced promptly, and dive teams later retrieved the bodies of Monson, De Angel-Sola, and Loechler from the lake.
In a heartfelt statement, Wabasha Ambulance expressed the profound sense of loss felt within the community, noting, “We lost three people this weekend. Two of our own, and one more who never had to wear the uniform to be part of this family.” The phrase encapsulates the deep connections between the individuals, illustrating the tragedy of losing both colleagues and friends.
Following the recovery of the bodies, they were transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in St. Paul for autopsies. The investigation into the crash is being led by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which is tasked with determining the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Brian Quinn, the Mayor of Lake City, Minnesota, also extended his condolences to the grieving Wabasha community, stating, “Our hearts are with our neighbours in Wabasha as they mourn the tragic loss of two members of their fire service family, along with the heartbreaking loss of another life on Lake Pepin this weekend.” His remarks underscore the collective grief felt across neighbouring towns.
In response to the tragedy, Wabasha officials shared their sorrow via social media, emphasising the impact of the accident on the local community. “Over the weekend, we lost three exceptional community members in a tragic boating accident,” they noted solemnly. Such sentiments reflect the close-knit nature of the community, which is now bound together in mourning.
As investigations continue, local authorities are working diligently to piece together the events leading up to the collision. The Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Pepin County Sheriff’s Office are collaborating on the inquiry, but they have yet to provide further updates.
This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers that come with recreational boating, highlighting the importance of safety measures in preventing such tragedies in the future.
