A 31-year-old man from Iowa has been sentenced to two decades in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to the unintended shooting of his friend on New Year’s Day. Jordan Isaac Carmi admitted to involuntary manslaughter, reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the tragic incident that claimed the life of 30-year-old Tony Alexander Young.
The sentencing took place on July 10, during which Carmi expressed his remorse for the event, stating to District Judge Samantha Gronewald, “I accidentally shot my friend,” as reported by the Polk County Attorney’s Office. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Young’s estate.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of January 1, following a dispute between Carmi and a group of individuals near his apartment. Tony Alexander Young was fondly remembered by his mother, Yvette Young, as a loving parent with “a vibrant, effervescent personality.” In a poignant address to the court, she reflected on the joy her son brought into their lives, lamenting, “He always brought music to my house, and now there is none.”
