Frank Ferrer, the longest-serving drummer for Guns N’ Roses, has recently opened up about his time with the iconic rock band and shared insights into the personality of frontman Axl Rose. In a candid interview following his departure from Guns N’ Roses, Ferrer described Rose as often misunderstood, contradicting the tough-guy image projected by the media.

Ferrer, who spent an impressive 19 years with the band, joined in 2006 as a temporary replacement for Brian “Brain” Mantia. Initially intended to be a brief engagement, Ferrer’s role evolved into a lengthy tenure, making him the band’s longest-serving drummer. During this time, he played on the album “Chinese Democracy” and remained with the group even after the return of original members Slash and Duff McKagan in 2016.

In his recent interview, Ferrer expressed a desire for people to understand the real Axl Rose, stating, “The world thinks that he’s a scary, mean guy. And he’s the complete opposite.” He noted that while Rose may not tolerate foolishness, he is actually warm, generous, and possesses a great sense of humour. Ferrer wished for fans to see the kind and supportive side of Rose that he has experienced firsthand, emphasising the frontman’s commitment to both his music and his bandmates.

Reflecting on his initial encounters with Rose, Ferrer recalls a welcoming atmosphere. He said, “Him being really super nice and friendly…I think he saw it too that this is a big deal.” This positive reception helped Ferrer feel at ease as he stepped into a significant role in a legendary band.
Ferrer further praised Rose’s relentless work ethic, marveling at his ability to thrive under pressure. He recalled how Rose dedicated himself to delivering top performances night after night, often inspiring Ferrer and the rest of the band to elevate their own energy levels on stage. “He would lead the way,” Ferrer explained, noting that Rose’s commitment turned every show into a powerful experience, pushing the band members to match his intensity.
In March 2025, Guns N’ Roses announced Ferrer’s departure, naming Isaac Carpenter as his successor. Despite the end of this chapter, Ferrer maintained that there was no ill will between him and the band. He stated, “Everything comes to an end,” and acknowledged the inevitability of transitions in life. Ferrer expressed gratitude for his time with Guns N’ Roses and remarked on how he looks back with fondness on his experiences.
The former drummer admitted that while he sometimes misses the thrill of being part of the iconic band, he is also excited about the new projects he has embarked on since leaving. “Sometimes I miss it and sometimes I don’t,” he shared, implying that his memories from those years remain dear, even as he forges ahead in his musical career.
Looking to the future, Ferrer suggested that he and Rose may reunite at some point, whether for a casual meeting or even a musical collaboration. “There’s no animosity. None,” he clarified, indicating a sense of camaraderie and respect remains between them.
Since his exit, Ferrer has kept himself busy with two new musical endeavours—bands named Slax and One Night Only. He continues to perform with fellow seasoned musicians across Europe, embracing the next steps of his career while cherishing the legacy he built with one of rock’s most celebrated bands.
